Francis Donald "Don" Halm

Francis Donald "Don" Halm Okemos Age 88, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 1, 2013. He was born in Saginaw, Michigan on February 1, 1925 to George Theodore Halm and Amalia Stier Halm. Don attended Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School in Saginaw where he played football. Shortly after graduating, he enlisted in the United States Navy to serve his country during World War II at the same time as his brothers Bob, Bill and Jack. Don was honorably discharged after serving as a radioman in the Asian Pacific Theater Campaign on the U.S.S. Shellbark. Don attended Michigan State University on the GI Bill. After graduating in business, Don sold pharmaceuticals for Wyeth and McNeil for more than 40 years. Throughout his life, Don pursued a lifelong passion of gardening, backyard bird feeding, art and movie appreciation, politics, and building and enjoying an extensive jazz music library. Upon retirement, he volunteered for the McRee Guest House, the State of Michigan Historical Museum, Meridian Senior Center, and Lifeline Emergency Response Service. Don was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and ex-wife, Marian Kandler. He is survived by his children, Jim (Carol) of Okemos, Mary Dean of Los Angeles, Tom Halm of Walled Lake, Ted Halm of Big Rapids, Rick Halm of Flushing, Ann (Eric) Kammerer of East Lansing, Jacki Halm of East Lansing; daughter-in-law, Debbie Gibbs-Halm of Grand Blanc; 10 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Burcham Hills Center for Health and Rehabilitation for their kind and respectful care of their father. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 6, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 955 Alton Rd, East Lansing, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Don's memory may be made to the McRee Guest House, 2721 S. Washington Ave., Lansing, MI 48910.
