George N. Abbott Jr.

George N. Abbott Jr. Maple Rapids George N. Abbott Jr. died Thursday, February 24, 2011 at the age of 76. He was born December 22, 1934 in Essex Township, Clinton County, Michigan the son of George Sr. and Doris (Taylor) Abbott. George served in the U.S. Air Force, attended the Maple Rapids United Methodist Church and was a member of UAW Local #652. He coached Pee Wee, Little League and Pony League baseball in Maple Rapids from 1959 to 1978 and was a Maple Rapids Fireman for 25 years. George was active in local government. He served three different times on the Village Council beginning in 1968 and was elected Mayor of Maple Rapids on April 3, 1996 and served until he retired in 2008. George was named Honorary Lamplighter at the 2009 Maple Rapids Lamplighter Festival. George retired from Oldsmobile in 1989 with 38 years of service. On July 1, 1959 he married Patricia Lewis and she survives him. Also surviving is one daughter, Georgiana (Kenneth) Norris of Harlan, IN; one son, Patrick (Dee) Abbott of Hessel, MI; six grandchildren, Jonathon (Liz) Abbott, Erica (Mike) Roberts, Erin (Adam) Leasure, Dustin (Loren) Norris, Nicole Abbott and Brenden Zammaron and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son Jonathon and three sisters, Margaret Wakeman, Ruth Keckel and Jean Gavenda. A memorial service will be held 11:00a.m. Friday, March 4, 2011 at the Maple Rapids United Methodist Church with Pastor Kathy Leydorf officiating. Memorials may be made to the Maple Rapids Ball Boosters or the Maple Rapids Volunteer Fire Department C/O the Village of Maple Rapids P.O. Box 200 Maple Rapids, Michigan 48853. The family was assisted with these arrangements by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, St. Johns.
