Gilbert Earl Lee


Passed away Friday, March 14, 2014 at the age of 90. He was a resident in the Lansing area since 1961. Gilbert was born in Merrillan, Wisconsin on January 17, 1924 to the late William and Pearl (Woodard) Lee. Gilbert joined the U.S. Navy in 1941 and served as a Salvage Diver during World War II. After the war, he served 30 years in the Navy Reserves. He was a skilled carpenter for Granger and then Hannel-Vance Construction companies for over 40 years. After Gilbert retired he taught part-time at Lansing Community College the art of gunsmithing, his favorite hobby. In addition, he enjoyed woodworking, creating cabinets and furniture.  Gilbert was a member of the Looking Glass River Sportsman Club where he taught his grandchildren, Eric and Renee, firearm shooting and safety. Gilbert enjoyed hunting, spending time with his family and friends. He especially loved traveling with his wife Olga around the U.S.A. attending the U.S. Navy Salvage Divers Reunions.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Olga  Lee (2003), a daughter Olga Marie Woodard (2006), a grandson, Trevor Johnson (2012), and 3 brothers, William, Lyle (Bernice), and Harold Lee (2013).

Gilbert is survived by a daughter Michele (Tom) Hufnagel, a son Gil W. Lee, 4 grandchildren, Eric (Rachel Pearson) Hufnagel, Renee (John) McGarry, Todd Johnson, Joel Buckley, 6 great-grandchildren, a brother Elwood (Lois) Lee, a sister Lota (Jim) Wyngant, 2 sister-in-laws, Esther and Roselyn Lee, and his closest friends William (Sharon) Darr, Richard (Kathy) Darr and Ace (Judy) Correl.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the Palmer, Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Lansing Chapel, with Rev. Steve Ezop officiating. Interment will follow Thursday at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a .
