Howard Kellerman Obituary

Howard Hughes Kellerman M.D. Laingsburg Howard H. Kellerman, born June 8, 1929, died Monday, May 14th at the age of 82 in an accidental death due to a rogue lawn mower which he stubbornly upset. This is the first argument he ever lost. Dr. Kellerman enlisted in the marines at age 16, hiding his true age and served in China in the early post World War II era. Howard earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1961 in the top 10% of his class having never graduated from High School or College. He practiced medicine for 34 years in Lansing, MI retiring from Sparrow Emergency Department in 1995. He was a founding member of the Sparrow ER and saved many lives in the Lansing area. Dr. Kellerman was a proud life member of the NRA and an avid hunter and shooter. Favorite sport was shooting bees trying to eat his log home. His other loves included scuba diving, piloting his own plane, dogs, motorcycles and boating. Howard greatly enjoyed "Adventure Traveling" and among his many experiences were an African Safari and fending off drug smugglers while boating in the Caribbean. He also was the unlikely survivor of an exploding commode while on a bare boat catamaran trip in the Bahamas. Dr. Kellerman was predeceased by his parents Estella and Don Kellerman, his daughter Jamie and his son Don. He is survived by his wife of 33 years Cheri, and his sons Todd Hughes Kellerman and Dustin Repaskey. Howard will be sorely missed by his brother Richard (Bonnie) who spent many hours loading bullets and shooting together, and his sister Elaine Rosati. He also leaves behind his dearest friend and fellow hunter of many years, Kip Harman. We will all miss his cool analytical mind and his ever romantic heart. A celebration of Howard's life is planned for Saturday, June 9th at noon at The Farm.

We will miss Doc's visit's. He would bring in the dog's and spend time talking guns and reloading. We always enjoyed his humor.

I remember "Charlie" fondly from my childhood... my father, Jim Effner, worked as a lab tech at Sparrow in the early '60s and was a very close friend until his death. I remember the photos of Charlie's and Dad's motorcycle trip out west- one in particular of them straddling the Continental Divide- on foot, lol. Charlie was a kind, soft-spoken, wonderful man with a great sense of humor. I am deeply saddened to hear of his death, but the manner in which he went is so him!

When ever I came in with a patient to the ER I was always happy to see that Dr. Kellerman was on duty. He was a class act that no one could match and truly one of a kind. Whenever we had the chance on or off duty we talked about firearms and shooting. Many wonderful memories. He will be missed.

Dr Kellerman delivered my first child in 1967, he was a really great Dr. And he was very compassionate. I thought a lot of im, as a person, as well as a Dr. He also took care of my oldest child through ER, as he was a severe athmatic. Have fond memories. Prayeers for the family.
