James Raymond Davis

James Raymond Davis East Lansing Passed away February 1, 2013 at the age of 86. He was born July 24, 1926 in Caldwell, Ohio to Esther Farson Davis and Fred Raymond Davis and grew up in Columbus, Ohio. His parents and his sister, Eileen Esther Kreager preceded him in death. Jim is survived by his daughter, Brenda of Lansing. Two sons Roger of Lansing and Mark (Rebecca) of Haslett. Three grandchildren Sarah (Jeremy Burrell), Aaron, Emily, and great grandson Zachary Burrell. Jim graduated from Columbus North High School and then from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He served two years in the U .S, Navy and went on to a career in engineering with various manufacturers, mostly in the field of product engineering and development. He finished his career at Dart Container in Mason. After Jim retired, he attended Michigan State University and received a B.A. in Humanities. This experience was very rewarding, since it complemented his engineering education. He enjoyed drama, music, literature, dance, and art. He belonged to two book reading groups and served on the Boarshead Board. He found satisfaction in writing and produced many essays and poems. He was active in the Unitarian Universalist Church and served as board President as well as in many other capacities. He was also committed to the well-being of Moore Living Centers and served as board President for several years. Jim's outdoor activities included bird-watching, golfing, and travel. He was grateful to Capital Area Audubon members for teaching him bird-watching and was a long-time member of the FOF golf group. Since 1993, Jim was a member of a men's support group which included a great group of men. A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church in East Lansing on Thursday February 7, at 11am.
