Joseph M. Gross

Joseph M. Gross Lansing Joseph Michael Gross passed away on February 14, 2014 at Sparrow Hospice House of Mid-Michigan in Lansing, MI at the age of 85. Joe was born on August 18, 1928 in Beal City, MI, the sixth of nine children of Joseph J. and Ida (Trierweiler) Gross. He attended school in Rosebush, MI through the eighth grade, then stayed home to help on the family farm. Later he completed his GED. In January 1951 Joe was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served two years on active duty in France before returning in December 1952. After serving he moved to Lansing and was employed by General Parts and Service as a heavy truck mechanic until 1987, helping to keep Lansing's fire trucks and police cars on the road. He then opened his own auto electric business, Joe's Alternator & Starter Repair, which he operated until 2012. Joe married Theresa Marie O'Brien in Mt. Pleasant, MI on June 26, 1954 at Sacred Heart Church. Joe and Theresa were blessed with seven sons. Joe was an active member of St. Therese Parish in Lansing for a number of years, and later was a member of St. Mary Cathedral Parish in Lansing where he enjoyed serving Mass on weekdays. He also volunteered for many years with the Boy Scouts, as a Scoutmaster and on District committees. Never far from his rural roots, Joe's favorite hobby was his garden. He also enjoyed welding and camping. He was a lifelong fan of the Detroit Tigers. Joe is survived by Theresa, his wife of 59 years; sons Michael (Sara), Peter (Jeanne), Edward (Nora), Kenneth (Julie), Terry, Tim (Korrena) and Ron; 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; brothers Paul and Hilary (Beverly); sisters Bernadette Sunderman and Catherine (Russell) Hesch; and sisters-in-law Betty and Rosanne. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Carl, Herbert and Stanley; sister Eleanor Esch; brothers-in-law Paul Esch and Bert Sunderman; and sisters-in-law Bee and Vivian. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Cathedral at 219 Seymour Ave. in Lansing on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. with Mgsr. George Michalek and Mgsr. Bernard Reilly presiding. The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery at 2520 W. Willow St. in Lansing. Visitation for family and friends will be on Monday, February 17, 2014 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Palmer Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Lansing Chapel, 520 E. Mt. Hope Ave., Lansing, where the Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. The family will also receive friends Tuesday, February 18, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. until the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made in Joe's name to Mother Teresa House in Lansing, St. Mary Cathedral, Sparrow Hospice House of Mid-Michigan or EWTN Network.
