Richard Wayne Garn Charlotte Richard Wayne Garn, 79, of Charlotte, MI, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, in the same home where he was born on September 19, 1933, the son of Marten E. and Glenna (Shelton) Garn. Richard attended Gresham Elementary, graduated from Charlotte High School in 1952, and received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Michigan State University
. He taught at Charlotte Junior and Senior High School for 29 years until his retirement in 1993. He was a lifelong farmer in Chester Township, remaining active in this endeavor until illness forced him from the field in July 2012. After attending the Gresham Methodist church as a youth, Richard joined the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Community of Christ since 2001) in 1962 where he served faithfully in many leadership offices over the next fifty years, the last two in the Saints Church of Jesus Christ congregation. He served as a volunteer in various organizations, where he could be found serving others. He drove thousands of miles shuttling kids and adults to church and community events. Richard enjoyed trips to the British Isles, Nova Scotia, and Alaska, but spent most of his "retirement" trips at work on projects with the church's RV Service Club at various church campgrounds and other properties. Richard was devoted to his family. He always set a great example in all he did for his children and grandchildren. His demands were few, but they were fundamental. Chief among them was honesty. His integrity was beyond reproach. He was always a great support to his wife and kids in all their activities. Perhaps more than anything, he delighted in watching his grandchildren participate in sports and music events. Richard was a friend to everyone and stranger to none, visiting with anyone, anywhere, and under any circumstance. He exemplified the scripture, ". . . when ye are in the service of your fellow beings, ye are only in the service of your God." Richard is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary June (Muir) Garn; his children: Marten (Leslie) Garn, Melissa Walton and Madora (Steve) Graffeo; grandchildren: Cherie (Jeff) Williams, Stephanie Wangler, Matthew, Hannah, and Miles Garn, James, William, Sarah, and Jonathon Walton, and Tyler, Nicholas (Brittany), and McLane Graffeo; brother, Douglas Garn, and sister, Marilyn Effner; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Matthew; son-in-law, Douglas Walton; and brother, Rod Garn. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at the Community of Christ Church in Charlotte with Elders Ray Valley and Mel Crowley officiating. Visitation will be 7:00-9:00 PM on Friday, October 19 and 3:00-5:00 and 7:00-9:00 PM on Saturday, October 20 at Pray Funeral Home. Interment will take place in Gresham Cemetery.
