Walter E. Eschtruth
Walter Eugene Eschtruth, 93, born July 24, 1920 in Elsie, MI, passed away March 5, 2014 in Lansing, MI.
In 1927 he was in the second grade, when the Bath Consolidated School disaster occurred. Walter graduated from James Cousins High School, Bath, MI; farmed from his childhood until 1947 at his home in Bath and later on their farm in St. Johns. From 1947 until 1960 he was a salesman and TV repairman at his brother's appliance store (Eschtruth Electric Co.) in Grand Ledge; from 1960 until retirement on January 1, 1983 he served the Grand Ledge area as a Prudential Insurance Agent, thereafter spent winters in Mesa, AZ and summers at his summer place in Eaton Rapids. Walter was a very active member of the Grand Ledge First United Methodist Church; sustaining member of Boy Scouts of America, past Charter President of Grand Ledge Kiwanis Club; past president of Arizona Kiwanis Club and most recent treasurer of the Eaton Rapids Kiwanis Club; an avid photographer and enjoyed spending time with family.
He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Dorris, parents, Francis and Ruth (Webster) Eschtruth, brothers Frank, William, and Raymond; sisters Lucetta Mead, Martha David, Marion Markham, Iva Corn and Zelma Kwaitt. Survivors include his children: Lucille (Fred) Saling-Gatzke of Eaton Rapids, Douglas (Lynne) of Haslett, and Eugene (Ricci) of Grand Ledge; 9 grandchildren: Albert Saling, Timothy Saling, Bethany, Rebecca, David, Brian, Anne, Betsy and Daniel Eschtruth, 14 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
A Funeral Service will be held Monday, March 10, 2014 - 11:00 a.m. at the Grand Ledge First United Methodist Church, 411 Harrison St., with Rev. Cindy Skutar officiating. Interment at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bath, MI. Visitations will be held Sunday, March 9th from 2-4 p.m. at the Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge.
