Rollin Dart Obituary

Rollin Bashford Dart

Born December 2, 1925   Died May 5, 2016

Rollin Bashford Dart greeted his Lord and Savior on May 5, 2016 after several months of illness.  He was born December 2, 1925 at Miss Maude Orr's Hospital in Mason, Michigan to Doc C. Dart and Zola Bashford Dart.  He grew up in Mason and graduated from Mason High School in 1943.  He was active in the Boy Scouts and became an Eagle Scout.  He joined the U. S. Marine Corps in the Spring of 1943, serving in the Pacific Theatre (Iwo Jima).  After his return in 1946, he attended Michigan Agricultural College (MSU) for two years.

Rollin married Mary Vay Corbin on March 28, 1948; shortly thereafter they moved to Mason and set up housekeeping, raising two children, Melanie Sue Dart and Doc Corbin Dart. Rollin's early career was in insurance, employed by the Dart Insurance Agency.  He worked under the training and mentorship of his uncle, John Dart. While still employed in insurance, he was elected Chairman of the Board and President of Dart National Bank in April, 1956.  In January, 1962, he concluded arrangements to leave Dart Insurance Agency and work at the Bank full-time as its President, C.E.O., and Chairman of the Board.

During the 1970s, Rollin Dart was a co-founder of the Michigan Association of Community Bankers, now known as Community Bankers of Michigan (CBM). He was also elected Michigan Director to the National Council of Independent Banks and served in this capacity for three years.

During his career, Rollin's community involvements were numerous.  In 1974, he was appointed Honorary Commander of the Michigan Naval Militia by the Governor of Michigan. He was honored as Citizen of the Year for 1990 by the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce.  In 1999, he received the Lillian Kumata Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service from the American Red Cross.  In recent years, he was also honored by the Community Bankers of Michigan and the Capital Region Community Foundation.

Rollin was active in many organizations, and served on several boards, including the 100 Club and the Lansing Safety Council. He was a member of the Mason Rotary Club where he faithfully raised funds for the eradication of polio world-wide and led singing at weekly meetings.  He was a strong supporter of Highfields, Inc. since its inception in 1962 and received the Highfields' Robert Drake Citizenship Award in the Spring of 2015.

Rollin was also a leader in the Holt/South Lansing community where he served on the Holt Education Foundation Board, the Holt-Dimondale School/Business Alliance, and volunteered at the Southside Community Kitchen. He was awarded the South Lansing Business Association's Community Service Person of the Year award in 2001.

Rollin's church and church family were very important to him.  He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mason for over 75 years, where he served as a deacon and elder, and more recently on the Missions Committee and in the Men's choir.

Rollin Dart, affectionately known by his friends as Rollie, was an extraordinary and unique person. He had unusual business instincts, growing Dart National Bank (later Dart Bank) from $8 million in assets to $179 million during his tenure at the helm. He made friends wherever he went, touched many lives, and impacted people in myriad positive ways.

Rollin was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jan, 2 nieces and 1 nephew, and wife Mary Vay.  He is survived by children Melanie Dart (David L. Howland) and Doc C. Dart, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a niece and nephew, and many cousins.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 10th from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at Gorsline-Runciman, Mason Ball-Dunn Chapel, 621 S. Jefferson, Mason. A memorial service will be held Monday, May 23rd at 11 a.m., with visitation at 10 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church of Mason, 131 E. Maple Street, Mason. A luncheon will follow at the Ingham County Fairgrounds Community Building, 700 E. Ash Street, Mason.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Mason, 131 Maple Street, Mason, MI 48854; Highfields, Inc., 5123 Old Plank Road, Onondaga, MI 49264, and Youth Haven Ranch, P. O. Box 97, Rives Junction, MI  49277.  On-line condolences may be made at www.grbdmason.com.

Deeply saddened to hear of Rollie's passing. We had the pleasure of being his Northern neighbors. In our brief few conversations, I came to know him as a true gentleman. His kind spirit tugged at my heart because he was so alike my late father. It was a true pleasure to meet Rollie and we will always remember his presence on Ross Lane. Rollie lived in our house on Oak Street when he graduated prior to joining the military. We had the pleasure of knowing him and sharing wine and some good times. He left a lasting impression with us and our daughter who now resides in his former room. His presence of character will be felt throughout our lives and in our home always! Rollin touched our hearts and delighted us with his good humor and stories! We will always cherish the fond memories we hold of a wonderful beacon in our community!

What a beautiful soul who impacted the lives of so many. I appreciate having learned, from Rollin, what it looks like to truly place others first and to be so very warm and authentic. May we all help to keep his spirit alive through how we treat and care for others.

Mr. Dart was such a gentleman. He always had a smile and a kind word. As an ambassador for Dart Bank, he treated every customer with the same courtesy, whether you had $100 to put in a savings account or $1,000,000 as a shareholder. As a community member he supported so many causes and made friends wherever he went. He truly lived a life of service, guided by his faith. How blessed we were to have known him. My prayers are with his family and all others who will feel his loss most deeply, yet I know they also find great comfort in knowing he has claimed his rightful place in heaven.

Rollin was a great community leader. I enjoyed many great conversations with him at his "first office," BestSellers in Mason. Regardless of how he physically felt, Rollie always greeted everyone with a smile and a kind word.

During my time in Rotary, Rollie was a constant advocate for Polio eradication, having seen the effects of it first hand. His efforts to raise money for the elimination of the disease can only be described as monumental, challenging the club to raise at least $2000 per year individually and asking the club leadership to match that amount. He was also our songmaster. Traditionally, every Rotary meeting begins with the singing of a song of fellowship and a patriotic song. One of his favorites, was "When the Saints Go Marching In." As we were already standing for the song, Rollie would begin marching around the room until all present were marching with him.

In the time I knew him, Rollin helped me to understand better the community in which I lived. The more I learned of him, the more I came to understand the lasting impact that Rollin Dart had on the City of Mason. He was responsible for literal changes to the landscape of the city. I am truly honored to have known him and been able to call him a friend.

Rollie was an amazing man. He worked with me when I was in need of aid in a very risky loan and approved it with almost just a handshake. Almost like a father would. So appropriate that he joined our Lord on the 10th anniversary of my own father's passing. I will greatly miss seeing him at our 100 Club Director Meetings.
His love of people and their endeavors graced all who knew him. My sympathies to his family are as deep as my joy for him to be reunited with the love of his life.

Rollin, I will miss our talks about the places I have traveled to and the places you wanted to go and see. I will cherish those times for the rest of my days. I hope I can live up to leadership in guiding our Rotary club in your quest of removing Polio from this earth. I am honor to be your friend.

It ws my pleasure to have met Cdr Rollie Dart shortly after joining the Michigan Naval Militia in July of 1989. Cdr Dart served the Michigan Naval Militia in many ways throughout his membership. He was a first class gentleman in every way and was very friendly to all members. Cdr Dart will be missed as a member of the Michigan Naval Militia and for all the ways he served the organization.

To the Dart Family,
My condolences to one and all. I knew Rollie through the Commanders Club of MI. The Club would have Commander Dart say a pray before our dinner at each of the dinners that he attended. What a great man. He will be missed greatly, but have comfort that he is now in a better place.

The Mason area business community has lost one of its guiding lights with Rollie's passing. He helped start the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce 44 years ago and has been a big supporter of economic development and community pride. He will be missed both personally and professionally by many of us.

I've come to know Rollin through his work with the American Red Cross, Mid-Michigan Chapter. He was a wonder person and a great supporter of the Mid-Michigan Chapter. He had a heart of gold and was a very special person to everyone who had come to know him and a friend to me over the years. I will always remember his wonderful smile and the kindness he had toward others from all walks of life. He was the official "Red Cross" greeter for a number of years at our volunteer recognition events.

My sympathy and prayers go out to his family and friends.
