Fred Colombo Obituary

Fred L. Colombo Charlotte Beloved father and grandfather, Fred L. Colombo, 90, of Charlotte, went peacefully into the arms of the Lord on June 26, 2012 in Joliet, IL. He is welcomed by his wife of 54 years, Loma (Hinesley), daughter-in-law Becky Colombo, grandchildren Amy Jorgensen and Christopher Colombo, and a host of siblings and friends. He is survived by his loving children: Marilyn Jorgensen, Elizabeth (David Mansfield) Colombo, Diane (Michael) Morey, John Colombo and Margaret Colombo; grandchildren: Sara (Ryan) Bier, Amber (Stephen) Kaleward, Loma (Konrad) Miller, Gregory and Steven Morey and Jeffery and Laura Colombo; and great-grandchildren Kaeden and Grace Kaleward. Fred was born January 4, 1922, in Joliet, IL, to Alfonso and Maria (Sera) Colombo. Following graduation from Joliet High School, he proudly served with the 11th Armored Division under Gen. Patton in Europe during WWII. During the war, he met Loma at Fort Polk, LA, and they married in his hometown in 1943. Following his service, he worked as a clerk for Oldsmobile in Lansing, MI, for 34 years. Following the loss of his wife, Fred reconnected with childhood friend Elvera Peloquin, creating wonderful memories and a special relationship lasting the rest of his years. Fred loved the Lord and believed in the power of prayer. He inspired others by the way he lived his life, always brightening the lives of all who knew him with his positive spirit. Many will miss his smiles, his joking, and his wisdom. He enjoyed playing cards and cribbage, bird-watching, and the many reunions with his army buddies and school mates. Above all, he cherished time spent with family and friends. The family is grateful to Margaret Colombo, Monty Elliott, Roger Peloquin, Leeanne Spencer, and Dr. Bo Wu for their care, love, and attention to their father in his last years. It meant a lot to Fred. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 2, 2012 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlotte, with Rev. Fr. Francis Mossholder officiating. Interment will take place in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 1, 2012, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 3:30 p.m. at Pray Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW Post 2406 of Charlotte. Arrangements by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.prayfuneral.com.

Dear Family of Fred Colombo. I remember Fred and Loma when they were members of St. Mary's Church in Mtn. View AR. Both were generous to our early church. I remember their kindness when my family's son was killed in a hunting accident. I and my husband extend our sympathy. Peace of the Lord be with you. LD and Martha Everett

Marilyn, I only met your Dad a few times when I visited at your house, but I always remember him as a really nice Dad. He always said HI and took time to visit with us girls. My Dad is gone too, and I wish you the greatest comfort possible by remembering him as he would want you to. He's in the House of the Lord now.
Fondly, Rosemary Jantz Hocij

Maggie -- you and your family were in my thoughts and prayers all week end. I know Monty will miss your Dad and can only imagine how much you all will. Hold on to all the wonderful memories you have with your Dad.....you were fortunate to be able to spend as much time as you did with him -- not many daughters have, or take that opportunity. One day at time, you will get through. Crawl up into the lap of your Heavenly Dad and He PROMISES to comfort and strengthen you!
