Charlene Schaar Obituary

Charlene Annette Schaar DeWitt Charlene Annette Schaar passed from this world to her heavenly home on May 15, 2010 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born September 16, 1935 to Ernie and Marguerite Shafley in DeWitt, MI. She spent her entire life touching the lives of others in her hometown of DeWitt. Charlene married her high school sweetheart, Bill Schaar on June 11, 1955. Together they raised their sons and grandchildren in the DeWitt community. Charlene was an active member of Redeemer United Methodist Church where she served the Lord in many ways. Her faith was ever present in the way she lived her life. Charlene's gift of service was well known through her 30 year career as a first grade teacher. Her passion was teaching but she taught more than academics, she taught others by example. She gave many hugs and pulled many teeth always with a gentle reminder of how much she cared. Charlene also graced many bleachers and auditoriums throughout her life. She enjoyed watching not only her sons and grandchildren, but many student/athletes over the years. She will long be remembered as a faithful fan. Charlene also found joy in traveling, sewing, quilting, and being with friends. She was blessed with a full, active life and was a blessing to many. Charlene is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Bill; sons, Dr. Mark (Mickie) Schaar, Mike (Luann) Schaa; and six grandchildren, Eric, Austin, Andrew, Anna, Christina, and Addison all of DeWitt. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Leonard (Felice) Shafley. A celebration of Charlene's life will be held Tuesday, May 18 at 11:00 a.m. at Redeemer United Methodist Church, 13980 Schavey Road, DeWitt, MI, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Dr. Rodney J. Kalajainen will be officiating. Interment will follow at the DeWitt Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 205 E. Washington, DeWitt on Monday, May 17, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Those desiring may make contributions to Redeemer United Methodist Church Memorial Fund in memory of Mrs. Schaar. I was a classmate of Charlene's in elementary school and have sweet memories of her. After many years, we met again at a reunion for others who had attended DeWitt schools and since then she had kept in touch on birthdays and Christmas with her wonderful Christmas greeting with photos of family. Condolences to her family. I know she is missed by many people.

I was so fortunate to have Mrs. Schaar as my 1st grade teacher in 1980. I have such wonderful memories of her pulling my teeth & giving me hugs. She invited our entire class over to her house for dinner once, which I remember so vividly. We even met her husband and sons that night, and I thought very fondly of them also. She was definitely one of the most caring and beautiful people I've ever met, and I've thought of her often over the years. My only regret is not getting back to Michigan to visit her after I moved out of state when I was 9. May she rest in peace.

Schaar Family~ I know that no words can take away your pain at a time like this. Mrs. Schaar was my first grade teacher many years ago. I have taken more memories from that year with me than I have of, perhaps, my entire elementary experience. Her compassion, enthusiasm, and kindness are the reason I am a teacher today. She will be greatly missed around town. You could always count on Mrs. Schaar to remember your name and to be truly interested in what her students were doing with thier lives. Heaven has definitely gained another great one.

Certain people come to mind when you think of hometown. Charlene is one of those people.

She will be remembered as the supportive spectator at every sporting event that Mark and David played together during our school years. Years later we were fellow Jazzercisers. I admired her stamina and dedication.

When my youngest son was entering first grade I made a special request to
the principal I wanted Mrs. Schaar to be his teacher. I had an "in" the principal was my father-in-law. She was one of his favorite teachers and he speaks highly of her to this day.

You are in our thoughts and prayers.

My condolences to you and your family. I did not know your grandma very well, only knew she was known as "Grandma Schaar." I enjoyed seeing her and your grandpa at about every basketball game. She always made it a point to come and ask how my son, Jordan was doing or how many points he had. She was a true "PANTHER" fan. She will be deeply missed.

Schaar Family,
It seems like just yesterday that my parents invited my brother's first grade teacher over for dinner. I can still remember how nervous and excited Nick was to have Mrs. Schaar at our home. I saw her at his funeral last September and she hadn't changed a bit - they both had suffered from the same terrible disease. My prayers and thoughts are with all of you.

To the Schaar Family- I am so terribly sorry for your loss. My youth is filled with wonderful memories of Mrs. Schaar - a warm, elegant and grand woman who was unfailingly kind and generous. She cut my hair, cheered for me on the bench during basketball games and made me feel right at home with one of my very best friends, Mark. She touched the lives of everyone she met in a special way, and while I have not seen her in many years, I will forever be inspired by the example she set. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Much love, Bruce Ferguson and family, Washington, DC

Mrs Schaar was my favorite teacher. We as students of hers are blessed to have been in her "class". All of my years of school, she was the one that made the most impact in my life. To this day, I speak of her to my children as the greatest teacher I ever had. She taught me how to count in french, and how to sit like a lady. I am so sorry to hear of her passing, my heart felt condolences to her family. Mrs Schaar was a wonderful person and will be missed by everyone that knew her.

I personally did not know Mrs. Schaar, but my husband had her as his first grade teacher and he has very wonderful memories of her. My parents had the honor of knowing Mrs. Schaar and her family and were breakfast regulars at Sams Kitchen with them. My mom informed me of Mrs. Schaar's passing and she told me that Mrs. Schaar was the best of the best, not much nicer than her. My thoughts and prayers to her family and friends.
