Clarence Rhodes Obituary

Clarence "Dusty" Rhodes Okemos Clarence "Dusty" Rhodes was born August 8, 1927 and died peacefully following a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's on August 28, 2010. He was born in Flint, Michigan to Walter H. Rhodes and Edith Gleason Rhodes. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack and Leon, and his stepson, Paul Sikarskie. He is survived by his wife, Marcia; 5 children, Martha (Mark) Bashore, Beth (Greg) Boyd, Jane (Jim) Wolfe, Dan (Julie) Rhodes and Matt (Caryn) Rhodes; his former wife, Mary Rhodes; 2 stepchildren, David Sikarskie and Anya (Brian) Anderson; and 9 grandchildren. He graduated from Flint Central in 1945 then served in the US Navy 1945-1946. He graduated from MSU in 1950 with a degree in broadcasting and began his radio career at WKAR in East Lansing. He often spoke of how fortunate he was to have benefited from the GI Bill. He worked in radio throughout Michigan until 1964 when he became vice-president of Panax Corp. which expanded his career to include newspaper publishing and television until 1974. His international career in TV news began as president of UPITN in London. With UPITN he traveled extensively around the globe. Under his leadership it expanded to serve 120 clients in over 70 countries. He established the first daily international satellite news transmission. Upon retirement from TV news he returned to his home town of Okemos. With a new appreciation of international cuisine and wine, he founded a series of businesses starting with Elysee Boulangerie in 1980, Dusty's Cellar in 1981, Dusty's Wine Bar in 1987 and Dusty's English Inn 1990. All of his children worked with him before moving on to careers of their own. His son Matt purchased the Cellar and Wine Bar in 1995 and now employs numerous staff including third generation family members. One of Dusty's great loves was to welcome fans to Spartan Stadium with the words "This is Dusty Rhodes your Saturday spokesman for Spartan Football". He would close with the phrase "Please drive as if your family is in the other car." He loves MSU sports and did radio play by play for many years including the famous 1966 10-10 tie with Notre Dame. In 2005 MSU honored Dusty for his contributions to the university and the community by granting him a Distinguished Alumni Award. He served this community as a member of the Okemos School Board and was actively involved in the OAKS athletic program. He loved his wife Marcia and together took great pleasure in their home and gardens on Buttercup Lane, their cottage near Bath, England and their love of good food, good wine and one another. In spite of a very humble childhood, he became an incredibly positive life force. He shared with family, friends and customers, an appreciation for the finer things in life, but more so for the simple pleasures of family, health and happiness. We will all miss his energy, enthusiasm kindness and positive outlook on life. He loved us all and we loved him very much. The Memorial Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, September 1, 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 955 Alton Rd., East Lansing with Rev. Mark Inglot, officiating. The family will receive friends at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E Grand River Avenue, East Lansing Monday from 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with the Scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Those desiring may make contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, 310 N. I first heard Dusty Rhodes doing a remote show on WAMM Radio in Flint, probably circa 1960, when I was just a kid. I always remembered him fondly.

Dear Marcia and family,

It was with great sadness that we learned of Dusty's passing. We will always remember his enthusiasm for family and community. He taught us so much about food & wine and how to enjoy the pleasures of a good table surrounded by family & friends.

One of our fondest memories is sharing a glass of wine in the cellar of the store on Christmas Eve. Dusty would wear his Santa hat and we "sneak to the cellar" during store hours for a tasting.

Please extend our sympathies to all of Dusty's children. Sending you our love & hugs.

My husband & I enjoyed the Wine Club he had in his early days of promoting wine, before he had the store. We met in different restaurants in Lansing & we learned a lot about wine. My husband passed away 10 years ago this fall, so such pleasant momories, wine, & friends continue to sustain me.
I hadn't realized he was from Flint & have just been to my class reunion at Flint Central this summer. Loved his positive personality & outlook on life. He would not know me, but made a difference in my life, so can hardly imagine how many other lives he touched. Beth Hubbell

John and I are in Bath, UK and I started thinking about Dusty. Not having seen him for a few years I went online to send him a note and saw that he had recently passed away. I can still picture him at our wedding 25yrs ago with the largest bottle of Perrier Jouet that I'd ever seen, chatting and pouring for the other guests. He was one of a kind and the world is a poorer place without him. Our hearfelt condolences to all who loved him. Kathleen and John Branson Adelaide S. Australia

Dusty is an iconic personality in Spartan Country and he will be missed by all of us who have listened to his broadcasts on the radio and enjoyed frequenting his charming places of businesses including Dusty’s Cellar and Dusty’s English Inn. Dusty clearly delighted in creating the perfect environment where folks could feel transported to a place of romantic tranquility. We have had many transcendent dining experiences at the English Inn and always think of Dusty when we are there for anniversaries and special occasions. We had the good fortune to have spoken to Dusty at our summer neighborhood Ice Cream Social on August 3rd of this year. He was as personable and as gracious as ever. Dusty’s devotion to his community and the world at large has made this planet a better place. We will all do him honor to remember his legacy and follow his example.

Dear Martha, Beth and Jane,
I remember your dad from years ago in Flint -- when I enjoyed the three of you as one of your babysitters. Your father was a very special individual and loved you deeply. You are in my thoughts and prayers at this time.

Rhodes Family:
Today's service at St. Thomas was a classic mix of theology and personality, as it captured the sense of friendship, loyalty and hospitality. As I met stranger after stranger, who repeatedly and sincerely asked what my connection to Rusty was. It reminded me of two special things. One, it was Will Rogers that said "a stranger is just a friend I ain't met yet". It correctly identified Dusty.
Secondly, I found myself commenting that I was a "casual" friend until I realized that Dusty did not have "casual" friends. Each of us was a "friend", period. The eulogy remarks were right on target, as all us related to the personal stories. He might object to being called a "legend" but with us he will always be legendary.

Dear Matt and Martha,

I was so sorry to hear of your father's death. I remember when his bread store opened in Meridan Mall. I loved the bread and, of course, the stollen. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

Dear Dusty, It was difficult when I heard the news of your passing. The first thing that came to mind was that I was fortunate to be one of the souls that knew you. We are all blessed by those who come into our lives and change us in subtle ways-some small, some large. I will miss you dear friend.
I give thanks to Divinity that our paths crossed in this lifetime. The fragrance of your Being shall remain with me always. Good bye my Friend.

Jane, so sorry to hear about your dad. Even though I never really knew him, I think everyone knew him in a way. I have always enjoyed stopping at the cellar for wine, cigars for my husband, or those wonderful hard rolls. His legacy will live on for many, many years to come.

I had the good fortune to meet Dusty and share laughs with him several years ago. Upon our initial conversation, he promptly introduced me to his family members present with him that evening and treated me like an old friend. What a bright light in this sometimes gloomy world! We have all been blessed by Dusty's legacy.

I'm remembering a night at the English Inn when a storm took out the power and after ushering all the other dinner guests out with apologies, Dusty rallied we guests from his table and with flash lights and cell phones, we ordered pizzas, raided the wine cellar and pulled our chairs around the big fireplace to share laughter and friendship the way it was done at roadside inns for ages.

God speed Dusty. You were loved and you loved well my friend.

Dusty was a remarkable man. We looked forward as much to his company as to his food when he would circulate among guests at both Dusty's in Okemos and Dusty's English Inn. He had so much life in him that sometimes he would not so much speak with you as chirp like a song bird.

He was one of a kind and we wish to convey our sincere good wishes to all the surviving members of his family. Sincerely, Robert Uphaus and Lois Rosen
