George Hanley Obituary

George Philip Hanley PE George Philip Hanley PE, age 92, formerly of Rochester Hills, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 8th 2010. He leaves behind his loving wife of 65 years Anastasia "Stacey", daughter Mary (Larry) Machacek, sons William "Bill" and John (Patricia). He will be missed by his seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was born in Detroit, Michigan to parents John and Jane Hanley, he attended St Leo's High School and the University of Detroit with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and trained as a Licensed Professional Engineer in Michigan. He was a Fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers, a 70 year member. He was granted 18 US Patents, authored numerous technical papers, and was the author of two books, The Marmon Heritage and Firefighters from Prospect. After graduating from U of D, he worked at Long Mfg., Borg Warner and he taught at U of D for five years before starting a long career at General Motors, beginning at Detroit Diesel where he fathered the V series 71 engine family as well as the 149 series engines. He finished his career at the General Motors Technical center in Warren as the manager for heavy duty vehicle emissions, Environmental Activities Group. In retirement he restored two Marmon cars and traveled the United States and Australia with his wife Stacey. There will be no funeral. The family asks that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to Sparrow Clinton Memorial Hospital, St. Johns Michigan. The family is being served by Keck-Coleman Funeral Home, 989-224-4422.
