John Hunt Obituary

John Curtin Hunt Age 66, died Tuesday, August 4, 2009 in Lansing Michigan. Born in Goose Creek, Texas on August 1, 1943, John was the eldest of three sons of Gerald and Yvonne Hunt. John spent his life in service to country and community. He graduated from Pontiac Central High School in Pontiac, Michigan in 1961 and soon thereafter joined the U.S. Army. He went to work at the General Motors' Oldsmobile Plant in Lansing and served in several appointed and elected union leadership positions in UAW Local 652. John fulfilled his lifelong commitment to trade unionism by holding positions as Health and Safety Representative, Recording Secretary, and plant committeeman. John retired from General Motors in 1999 to live quietly in Lansing, enjoying blues music, reading, and time at home with his children. John was preceded in death by both his parents, as well as by his brother David. Surviving are his four children; Jay, James, Katherine and Dylan. John has one grandchild (Lana) by Jay and his wife, Naomi. Surviving, too, is brother, Steven Hunt. One of the proudest aspects of my life was being privileged to know and work with John Hunt. He had a clear vision of the problems and opportunities for greatness confronting us as a society, and the potential to work for positive change through strengthening the American labor movement. He was the leader of the advisory committee for instituting a Labor Studies program at Lansing Community College that trained hundreds of workers to reach a higher level of effectiveness in their own unions. He helped launch the Lansing Area Joint-Labor Management Committee from that base at LCC, which became a non-profit corporation that helped make many local employers become more effective and competitive by listening to and implementing their employees' ideas on how to reach their organizational goals. John was a strong voice for greater real democracy in the workplace, the union hall, and in society. I was glad to know him, and am saddened that he is gone. His actions created ripples that positively affected many, many people's lives. My sincere condolences to his family in their time of loss.
