Lola Leikam Obituary

Lola Mae Leikam Lansing Lola Mae Leikam, age 88, left her daughter's home in Grand Rapids to be with her Lord on Sunday, May 2, 2010. Born in Chester, Nebraska to German parents, Frank and Sophia Killian, on August 15, 1921, Lola was the third eldest of seven children. She would spend the majority of her childhood in Lincoln, Nebraska where her family owned a neighborhood grocery store. In 1945, Lola married her childhood friend, Edward Leikam, after his return from serving in the armed forces during the war. From there, the pair moved to Lansing, Michigan, to be near Ed's sister, Marie Froschieser and begin their new life together. Lola's hard work ethic and dedication to the betterment of her family was evident throughout her life. She and Ed were charter members of Our Savior Lutheran Church where both their children attended school and fostered the family's religious life. She held jobs outside the home with the Home Dairy from 1957-1967, and with Meijer at their first Lansing store from 1967 until her retirement in 1983. Even retirement didn't slow Lola down, she worked part-time at Sam's Club as a product demonstrator and on the weekends Ed and Lola traveled to numerous area craft shows where she sold handmade dolls, clothes, hand painted woodwork and household handiworks. Lola is survived by her husband of 64 years, Edward; their children, Edward Lee Leikam and Cheryl Mae Myers; her sisters, Doreen Miller and June Hill; grandchildren, Danielle Mora, Joanna Montgomery and Jeff (Carol) Leikam; and great-grandchildren, Ashley Kelly, Colton Mora, Travis Pienton, and April Leikam. Lola was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Sophia Killian; siblings, Margaret Valente, Ruth Geier, Alan Killian, and Frank Killian; and grandson, Marc Leikam. Special thanks to Sparrow, Spectrum Health Hospice and Ms. Elba Vazquez for their loving care. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 12-2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. As an alternative to flowers, memorial donations can be made in remembrance of Lola to Our Savior Lutheran Church, 7910 E. St. Joe Hwy., Lansing, MI 48917.

Dear Uncle Ed, Ed Jr., Cheryl & families, When I think of Aunt Lola I immediately see her smile. It was so loving and sincere. I also think of the lady who was always up for a shopping trip! She is at peace now and may our Lord give you comfort. All our sympathy and love,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time of loss. I remember the fun times we shared at the cabin in South Bend. Aunt Lola was always ready for any adventure and we thoroughly enjoyed our time together. We will always remember her with love.
