Lynn Bauder Obituary

(Carol) Lynn Bauder

Lansing

(Carol) Lynn Watson Bauder lived a life of faith and of service to others.  She received her eternal reward when she entered the Kingdom of Heaven on June 17, 2017.  Born the second of four children, Lynn's entrance into Heaven will complete her birth family as she joins her parents Vera Treva Roush Watson and Raymond Morton Watson, her older sister Laurel (Mark) and her younger siblings Dick and Peggy.  Lynn came to know the Lord at a young age, as she and her sister Laurel would walk to the nearby Nazarene church to learn about God.  Lynn's dad liked dessert with every meal, and it was here that Lynn developed her well-known sweet tooth.  She talked of making a batch of pistachio pudding for the family and a second that she would promptly eat all by herself.  When it became time to choose a career, Lynn felt there were only 3 options available for women at the time, a secretary (which she promptly dismissed because she was a terrible speller), a teacher, or a nurse.  Her parents and her sister were all school teachers, and as was typical of Lynn, she wanted that which was different and interesting.  This career also called to her love of service to others and to God.  She wanted a school where she could earn her BSN, and set her sights on the University of Michigan.  This provided her with not only an excellent education, but lifelong bragging rights as a Wolverine living in Spartan country.  While Lynn didn't care for sports, she never missed an opportunity to needle her family, neighbors or co-workers when Michigan beat State.  Her sister began dating a Navy man and Lynn soon decided she would like a pen pal in the Navy as well.  She began to write to a young man from the neighboring town of Freeland, and a double date was soon arranged.  This is how she met the love of her life, Richard Joseph Bauder.  They dated for four years and were married on August 25, 1956.  They were married for 56 years.  Lynn used her University of Michigan degree to put Dick through college at MSU, a fact she never let him forget.  She also earned a teaching certificate from MSU although she never used it.  After Dick's graduation, they moved several times, from California to Missouri and finally back home to Michigan, to be close to family.  Lynn took a job at Sparrow Hospital where she faithfully served for over 30 years, first in the postpartum department and eventually in outpatient surgery.  Lynn and Dick had 3 children, Joel David, Daniel Mark, and Mary-Kathleen Elizabeth Ann.  Lynn volunteered as a den mother and a brownie leader as well as a room mother for her children's classrooms.  Although she worked nights, she would get up at lunchtime to have a meal, a hug, and listening ear for her children.  As her children grew, Lynn developed a love of travel, traveling to all 50 states and all 7 continents.  She and Dick visited over 65 countries and had many unique experiences.  Lynn rode a donkey, a camel, and an elephant and swam with a dolphin.  She was proposed to by a member of the Maasi tribe (although she would only be his 3rd wife).  She became lost on the Yellow Mountain in China and could find no one that spoke English.  Lynn had boundless energy and for many years she rose at 5 AM to work out at the YMCA before work.  As she retired, Lynn threw herself into volunteering.  She volunteered for the Salvation Army, helping to prepare and serve lunch 3 days a week.  She also delivered Meals on Wheels, and spent one weekend a month at the McRee House.  Family was very important to Lynn.  She hosted many extended family reunions and Christmases.  Christmas was her very favorite holiday.  She put up her tree with its many, many ornaments the day after Thanksgiving.  She spoiled her children and grandchildren to no end.  She loved her grandchildren dearly, and attended every play, concert, game or activity they invited her to.  She loved to babysit her grandkids and was always ready with pop, pringles, and soft batch cookies.

Lynn suffered from Alzheimer 's disease, a specter that haunted her almost her entire life.  She watched her grandfather, mother, sister and husband fall to this insidious disease.  While she always said she wanted to die from an airplane crash on the way home from a fabulous trip with Dick, God had other plans.  She never questioned this and never complained.  She wore a smile until the end, and her faith never faltered.

Lynn is predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Richard; her parents, Ray and Vera Watson; her sisters, Peggy and Laurel (Mark); and her brother, Dick.  She is survived by her children, Joel (Sue), Daniel (Mary), and Mary-Kathleen (Matthew); and her grandchildren, Joshua, Jacob and Jeremiah Bauder, Jack and Xander Bauder; and Rebecca, Sarah, Nicholas, and Alyse VanAcker; and by her great-granddaughter, Gwendolyn.  She is also survived by her brothers-in-law, Al, Tom, and Corky; and her sisters-in-law, Mary, Susie, Sandy, Anita and Dee.  Donations may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association or to her favorite charity, the Lansing Food Bank.
