Shirley Bouck Obituary

Shirley M. Bouck Lansing Shirley M. Bouck, formerly of Grand Ledge, died on Friday, Oct. 15, 2010. She was 81. Born in Flint, MI on June 21, 1929, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Marie (Bottom) Raymond. From the early age of 5, dance was always her passion, having studied with the Virgiline Simmons Dance Studio of Lansing for many years. Shirley graduated from Eastern High School in 1947, and went on to attend Michigan State University. Shirley married Dr. Edward D. Bouck in 1951, and after her husband's 2-year stint in the US Navy, settled in Grand Ledge to raise a brood of five children. As a mother and a homemaker, she was also active in the Grand Ledge Child Study Club, and taught Sunday school at the First United Methodist Church of Grand Ledge for several years. A creative soul, Shirley wrote and published two children's books, "Abby the Tabby," and "The Bird Who Wouldn't Fly." Most recently, she served as a senior lifestyles columnist for www.thehollyexpress.com, a local on-line newspaper. Singing and dancing remained a huge part of Shirley's life, having founded "Shirl's Girls," a song and dance troupe that entertained at many a civic function throughout the 1970s. From 1980 through 1988, she was the Director and Producer of Grand Ledge's annual summer event, "Mudge's Follies." In 1990, Shirley created "Social Securities Scandals," a senior entertainment review for the "nifty over fifty" crowd. Shirley's enthusiasm and passion for music and dance was contagious among cast members as well as members of the audience. Over the years, Social Securities Scandals traveled and entertained all over the state of Michigan, as well as performing in Ohio, Florida and Texas. Shirley's work with Social Securities Scandals earned her several awards with the Lansing Civic Players. She was an active and fun loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many, and will be dearly missed. Shirley is survived by her five children, Laura (Gary) Martzke of Grandville, MI, Douglas (Alison) Bouck of Oxford, MI, Robert (Richard Wood) Bouck of Warren, David (Kris) Bouck of Canadian Lakes, MI, and Amy (Tony) Mayhew of Holly, MI; 7 grandchildren, Andrew Martzke, Jason (Michele) Martzke, Caitlin (Justin) Groeneveld, Ian Martzke, Jessica Mayhew, Brent and Adam Bouck; beloved sister and best friend, Jean Raymond of Grand Ledge, many loving and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Ed in 1986, and her parents Ken and Marie Raymond in 1980 and 1995 respectively. Visitations will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, October 16 at Peters and Murray Funeral Home, 301 E. Jefferson St., Grand Ledge, and on Sunday, October 17 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 18 with family receiving friends one hour prior to the service at the Grand Ledge First United Methodist Church, 411 Harrison St., with Pastors Molly Turner and Betty Smith officiating, and burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery in Grand Ledge. We extend our deepest sympathy to the Bouck family. I had the privilege and joy of working with Shirley in a number of musical productions over the years and she was a consummate professional who loved to have fun while doing top notch directing. We loved her smile, her joy and her wonderful soul. I wonder if tap dancing is allowed in heaven. If it isn't now it will be with Shirley's arrival. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the Bouck family.

The image of Shirley teaching St. Peter the 2-step as she passes through the Pearly Gates keeps running through my mind. I imagine the supreme celestial council has convened to change the name of the Heavenly Choir, since Shirley is soon to have the angels all dancing!
Love to you Shirl and to your Brood and to theirs.

We were dancers in the Social Security Scandals. Some of us were there from almost the beginning and others of us for a shorter time. All ten of us loved dancing with Shirley so much. We became great friends and loved our Tuesday night sessions at Shirley's, learning the steps for our next show and sharing stories with each other. We laughed together and we shared each others sorrows. Shirley was an inspiration to all of us - her great sense of humor, her liveliness, and her attention to the details that made her show great. She was truly an artist and a great friend. She will be sorely missed by us all. Love and Prayers to the Family from the Social Security Scandals Dancers: Joann Bayhan, Nada Bentley, Mary Ellen Claggett, Bonnie Radway,Carol Davis,Debbie Smith, Barb Kelsey, June Mills, and Barb Wynalda

My late mother played piano with Shirl's Girls for many years. The times she had and the very good and lasting friends she made were among her most favorite memories. Blessings to the family and RIP to a great lady.

Dear Children, You don't remember me, more than likely, but I baby sat for you when you were younger. Your Dad was my dentist, and your Mom a very good friend of mine! I always enjoyed seeing her and chatting with her! She will be missed by all! Annie Hoy Emmons

Take comfort in knowing that now you have a guardian angel, who's wearing tap shoes, to watch over you. I was Shirley's stage manager for 20 years for Scandals. She was not only my director, she was my friend. Her creativity and humor and love for her family will be missed.
