Teresa Bernardez Obituary

Teresa Bernardez, MD Teresa Bernardez, MD, born June 11, 1931 to Francisco Bernardez and Dolores Novoa in Buenos Aires, Argentina, named for Santa Teresa de Avila, the saint reformer of the Catholic Church. She was in private practice at the time of her death. She served as a full professor in the Department of Psychiatry, College of Human Medicine, Michigan State University, and was a founding and active member of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Council, a ground-breaking institution that doesn't require candidates for certification to possess MDs. She earned her MD at the University of Buenos Aires Medical School, interned at the Hospital Vaugirard in Paris, and did her residency, and served on the faculty, at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas. She served at the Tavistok Clinic in London during her first sabbatical, and was a fellow of the Bunting Institute at Radcliff College for her second sabbatical. She was an organizer of a mental health panel at the 2nd World Conference on Women in Copenhagen in 1980. Her passion was her work with patients facing multiple challenges, women and anger, group psychotherapy, and feminism. As chair of the American Psychiatric Association's Committee on Women, Teresa led a rebellion on the revision in 1985 of the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, attempting to remove from that manual three so-called mental disorders: Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, Paraphiliac Rapism Disorder, and Masochistic Personality Disorder. She was the author of numerous works and articles in her field, and ran many workshops. In addition, Teresa was a regular participant in various schools of Outward Bound, and traveled the globe, including numerous trips to Europe, Uruguay, Chile, the Caribbean, Thailand, Nepal, and other lands. More recently, Teresa began writing and performing poetry and had gathered an edited collection of 50 of her poems. Teresa was preceded in death by her parents, her four half-brothers Enrique, Francisco, Ricardo and Federico and half-sister Adelaida and her brother, Mariano. She is survived by her son, Diego Bonesatti, her ex-husband, Jorge Bonesatti. She is also survived by her sister, Aurora Bernardez, of Paris, France. An initial memorial service will be held Sunday July 18, 2010 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at her home at 835 Westlawn, East Lansing, MI. The family will receive friends and former patients during those hours. My wife, Mary, and I wish to express our condolences to the family of Teresa Bernardez. She was a good friend and an esteemed professional colleague.
Moreover, as an individual professional who knew and was affected by her work, it was obvious that she was the brightest, most competent, most helpful, and most ethical psychiatrist, as well as psychoanalyst, not only at the University and the Lansing area, but just about anywhere. Given her values, she would probably say that being the most helpful and the most ethical were the most important. Her extraordinarily positive impact will always be a part of the lives of her patients, her students, and those of her colleagues who knew and were influenced by her. Her death is truly a great loss to all of us.

Dr. Bernardez first hired me as her landscaper in 1994. She called me after I left a flyer in her door and for the next 18 years and currently I am still her landscaper. She is a loyal, kind and wonderful friend and she will
be missed. I appreciate the opportunity to have worked for her for so many years and helping me get my business "off the ground". My condolences to her family and friends. Her unexpected death is very saddening for me.

I and fellow service desk workers at the Michigan Athletic Club are saddened at the untimely passing of Teresa. She always had a smile and a response when coming in or leaving the MAC. My condolences to the family.

When I think of Teresa, I think of all of the things in life that count the most...love, depth of spirit, passion, beauty, respect, admiration, and fondness beyond measure. She was a pivitol person in my life and for what she gave me I am eternally grateful. I will miss her presence, but carry her in my heart and act on what she helped me learn each and every day. She gave me the greatest gift of all...the ability to appreciate life and all of its gifts.

Teresa's obituary reflects the passionate, courageous, spirited woman that she was, committed to social justice and change while also quietly helping others as a psychoanalyst. I knew her as a colleague at the Michigan Psychoanalytic Council, and am grateful that I was able to see her one last time at our June 2010 retreat. She, as always, stopped me in the hallway to inquire about me personally and say a few warm and positive words. I will miss her presence in our meetings. My deepest condolences to her family, friends, and former patients.

I am so very sad to hear of Teresa's death. She an I had many conversations about life, her work, her future, her travels, people she knew and enjoyed. She will be missed. She lived with great energy, and brought a passion to everything she did. There is no other Teresa Bernardez, a truely special individual.
