Marilyn, age 91, died on April 23, 2014 in East Lansing, Michigan after a brief illness. She was born on October 6, 1922 in LeRoy, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Andrew and Ruth Moe. Marilyn graduated from LeRoy High School in 1940 and continued her education to become a licensed beautician. She married her high school sweetheart, Vernon L. Sorenson, on May 31, 1945 when he returned from military service. For the next several years, she owned and operated her own hair salon in St. Paul, Minnesota while supporting her husband through his university education. In 1953, she moved with her family to East Lansing, Michigan when her husband joined the faculty at Michigan State University. East Lansing was her home for the remainder of her life, except for two years spent in Paris, France and eighteen months in Washington D.C. Above all, she devoted herself to home and family as a loving, caring and generous wife, mother and friend. She will be remembered by her children, family and friends as someone who cared deeply about others and whose smile could light up any room.
Preceded in death by her husband, Vernon, she is survived by her four children, Barbara (John) Case, Jean (Randy) Atkinson, Patricia Sorenson (Wayne Abbott) and Bryan Sorenson (Helen Cavazos). Marilyn also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren, with a tenth on the way.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home at 1730 E. Grand River, East Lansing, Michigan at 11 a.m. with visitation starting at 10 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to University Lutheran Church, 1020 S.
