Sherry Kay Arends, 71, died peacefully on Sunday, May 4, 2014 surrounded by her family and friends. Sherry was born in LaPorte, Indiana on June 15, 1942 and grew up in Coopersville, MI, graduating from high school there in 1963. In 1965, she married Herman Arends in Marne, MI and the two moved to the Lansing area to raise their children. Sherry loved children, working as a preschool teacher at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Lansing in the early 1980s. She was known to light up around children, even in the last few years with her illness. She looked forward to each summer when they would host a retreat for the Starfish Learning Center, a latch-key program for inner city Chicago children. She and her husband moved to Charlotte in 1993, where they have been very active in the community, volunteering in many activities and organizations. She was a very faithful member of the First Lutheran Church in Charlotte.
Sherry is survived by her husband of 48 years, Herm Arends; daughter, Monique Carey of Dimondale, MI, and son, Jon (Kelli) Arends of Potterville, MI; three grandchildren, Kyle and Bailey Arends and Grace Carey; brothers, David (Dorothy) Kamont of New Era, and Michael of Florida; sister, Alice (Otto) Smeed of Paw Paw; foster-sisters, Michele (Mike) Ripka of Grand Haven, and Aelise Little of Grand Rapids; foster-brother Norman (Cheryl) Vanderlaan of Ravenna; sister-in-law Dot Kalsbeck of Muskegon, and brother-in-law, Jim Gannon of Ravenna. Sherry was predeceased by her brothers, Jack McKinnon and Robert Kalsbeck and her sister, Margy Gannon.
Funeral services will be held Friday May 9, 2014, at 11:00am at First Lutheran Church in Charlotte with Rev. Timothy Olsen officiating. Interment will take place in Gresham Cemetery. The family will receive guests during visitation at the Pray Funeral Home from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm on Thursday May 8, 2014.
