Markham J. Shelley

Lansing, Michigan

Born Chicago, IL on 1 May 1929 to Ferdinand Joseph and Gladys Shelley. Died Grand Ledge, MI on 28 May 2014.

Mark Shelley was an independent, headstrong individual from the start, leaving home to join the Merchant Marines at 14, then the Army at 16.  He proudly sailed the Great Lakes and Atlantic Ocean during WWII on the E.C. Collins.  In the Army he worked his way up through the ranks to Chief Warrant Officer (W4) and was known as an expert in his field of supply and logistics. Much of his 30-year career was in Germany, interrupted by a tour in Korea, 2 in Vietnam, and several short stateside assignments for training.  Agent Orange in Vietnam took its toll on his health.  His medals included 3 Bronze Stars, a Meritorious Service medal, and dozens of others. A post-retirement career in stained glass window design and creation had him traveling the Great Lakes to many shows and events. Also thanks to his wife Evelyn's genealogy efforts several long lost brothers and sisters were located in recent years.  He always prided himself on a job well done, taking care of his family and being a good friend.  There are many whose lives are richer for having known him, he will be missed and remembered.

He  is survived by his wife, Evelyn Shelley of Lansing, Michigan; daughters, Linda Shelley of Colorado and Barbara Johnston (Michael) of Georgia; grandson, Joshua Johnston of California; siblings, Maryann Bolam of Florida, Arthur Amundson of Wisconsin, Robert Shelley of Washington, George Shelley of Utah, Jo Anita Shelley of Oregon; cousins whom he considered as siblings: Doug Neville (Stell), John Neville (Carrie), Fran Schuh (Rod), Pat Seguin (Russ), Rosemary Bechtold (Ray), Mike Neville (Pam); and everyone's extended families.

A memorial service will be held at a date and location yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.
