Margaret Lucy Roraback

Haslett

Mrs. Margaret Lucy Roraback, 90, of Haslett, Michigan passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2014. She was born January 15, 1924 in Schenectady, New York, daughter of the late Eugene and Eliza Reynolds Johnson. Margaret graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School and worked early in her life as a bookkeeper at Ter Bush and Powell Insurance Company and the American Locomotive Company in Schenectady where she met her future husband, John Burr Roraback. They married on September 28, 1946; theirs was a uniquely close and compatible union. They moved to Flint, Michigan in 1947, relocated to Saginaw in 1955, and later moved to East Lansing in 1962 where Margaret and John lived and raised their family of eight children.

A devout Catholic, Margaret was an active member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church in East Lansing for over 50 years. She had been a Eucharistic Minister, volunteered in the church office and was a mainstay for years in various parish organizations and activities. Margaret also contributed to her community for more than 30 years as a school crossing guard watching over and keeping children safe at Marble and Glencairn Elementary Schools. She expressed her social conscience through organizing around political issues and for Democratic Party candidates. Her many interests included travel, camping at Lake Michigan, bird watching, flowers, picnics, children and her family.  A very caring and loving person, Margaret was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. Her compassion, wisdom and mischievous Irish wit drew many close friends to her.

Margaret was predeceased by her husband, John Burr in 1990; her sons, John Michael and Paul David; and her sisters, Ann Kumpan, Claire Montanye and Mary Johnson.

Her survivors include her children: Jane Roraback and her husband Fred Cudnohufsky of Mason, Michigan; Christopher Roraback of Plymouth, Michigan; Timothy Roraback and his wife Donna Roraback and brother-in-law Rick Martin of Plymouth, Michigan; Eileen Roraback of Lansing, Michigan; Beth Roraback and her husband Keith Tipton of Spartanburg, South Carolina; and Rosanne Roraback and her husband John Fuja of Chicago, Illinois. She is also survived by her sisters: Jane Landauer of Flagstaff, Arizona, Eileen Donlon of Englewood, Florida, Marion (and Dr. John) Flynn of Venice, Florida. Margaret is additionally survived by five grandchildren: Simon Roraback, Amelia Roraback, Olivia Roraback, Andrea Roraback, and Paul Roraback Fuja, and one great-grandchild, Cassius Lynn, as well as many nieces and nephews. She will also be greatly missed by her devoted caregiver, Jeanna Kelley.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on July 21, 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 955 Alton Rd, East Lansing, with the Rev. Dan Westerman, officiating.  The Rite of Committal will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Lansing.  The family will receive friends on Sunday at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing, from 2-4 and 6-8, where a rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m.   The family will also receive friends at the church on Monday one hour prior to the service.

Expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (www.lls.org/) and Ele's Place (www.elesplace.org/).   On line condolences may be shared with the family at www.greastlansing.com.
