Mary Ellen Ottarson, 82, passed away on August 14, 2014. Mary Ellen was born April 6, 1932 to H. M. (Pat) and Georgia Murphy in Howell, Michigan. She graduated from East Lansing High School in 1950. Her life was devoted to her husband Jim and raising her family in a loving home. Mary Ellen worked at Haslett Middle School as a secretary for 12 years and retired as office manager for Kenneth Hanson, M.D. She was a charter member of Haslett Community Church and sang in the choir. Music was a passion, from vinyl albums played during dinner each evening to CDs enjoyed in her room just prior to entering Heaven. She belonged to the Member Caring Committee, delivered Meals-on-Wheels and was Financial Secretary for a number of years. She was also a member of the Haslett Women's Club, Parkinson's support group and the Post Office Auxiliary. She was an enthusiastic flower gardener, bird feeder, and an avid mystery reader.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Jim; her parents; and brother George.
Mary Ellen is survived by her sons Jim, (Janet) of Lima, Ohio and Jeff (fiancée Julie) of Shawnee, Kansas and grandchildren Janelle (Patrick) Guerin of Peachtree City, Georgia; Jill (Tim) Masie of Hilliard, OH; Spencer Ottarson of Shawnee, KS and Lindsay Ottarson of Lenexa, KS. Also surviving are great grandchildren Connor, Jace, and Audrey Guerin of Peachtree City, Georgia. Her nephew Jack Ottarson and his wife Diane Landry and their children Spencer, Parker and Amber of Williamston, Michigan are thought of as son, daughter in-law, and grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. August 22, 2014 at Haslett Community Church, 1427 Haslett Road, Haslett, MI with Rev. Kurt Kirchoff officiating. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Haslett Community Church for a memorial garden.
