James Franklin Powe


Age 100, was born March 18, 1914, in Lucedale, MS, to Ras and Alice Powe and made his transition to be with the Lord Thursday, August 21, 2014. Before moving to Lansing to be near family, Mr. Powe was a retired owner-operator of J & L Dry Cleaners in San Francisco, CA, for 32 years. After settling in Michigan, he became a faithful member of Paradise Missionary Baptist Church.

Mr. Powe enlisted in the US Army in 1941, and was a World War II Veteran who achieved the rank of Staff Sgt. James fell deeply in love with and married his soul-mate, Lela Mae Norwood in February, 1942. Theirs was an extraordinary union and their Holy Matrimony lasted 62 years before she passed in 2004.

Preceding him in death were: his mother and father, and nine brothers and sisters.

He leaves to cherish his memory: one younger sister, Myrtis Smith of Lansing; several cousins, nieces and nephews, great- nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

Friends and loved ones may visit Mr. Powe Monday, August 26, 3-8 p.m. at Riley Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, August 26, 1 p.m. at Paradise Missionary Baptist Church, 3403 Franette Rd., Pastor Hilton T. Thomas officiating. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the funeral.
