Donald L. Munger Grand Marais Donald Lee Munger, age 70, of 13995 Ellen Street, Grand Marais, danced his way to eternal life Thursday morning, May 24, 2012, at Marquette General Hospital, in the loving, comforting care of his family. Don is now "an angel with no halo, and one wing in the fire. Lord, please believe in him, like we believe in you." Born September 25, 1941 in Saginaw, the son of Lucius and Wanda (Welzein) Munger, Don was raised near Freeland and was a 1959 graduate of the Arthur Hill High School. He attended Ferris State College for two years where he played defensive guard on the football team. Don continued his education, transferring to Michigan State University, earning his Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1964. On August 21, 1965, he married Patricia "Pat" Stevens in St. Johns. The couple established their home on Island Road north of Fowler where they raised their family. For 34 years, he taught in St. Johns Public Schools, while at the same time farming 350 acres. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting on his acreage. Don retired from teaching in June of 1997. Following retirement, Don and Pat moved to Grand Marais, having been attracted years earlier by the beauty, serenity, and the fine fishing of the area. He enjoyed growing a huge garden, gathering with friends under the tree, and the companionship of his canine pal, Buster. Don is survived by his wife of 46 years, Pat; daughter, Lisa (Jeff) Pierce of Rifle, CO and their daughter, Emma Marais Pierce; son, Luke (Amanda) Munger of Cheboygan and their sons, Luke Edward Munger and Mark Lee Munger. Also surviving are Don's brothers, James (Carol) Munger of North Dartmouth, MA and Lucius Munger of Cheboygan; brother-in-law, James (Gerry) Stevens of Perrinton; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Munger; and a sister-in-law, Frances Munger. A memorial service will be held at the Grand Marais United Methodist Church in Grand Marais on Saturday, June 2 at 3:00 p.m. Immediately following, a celebration of Don's life will be held at Camp Munger.
