Obituary Condolences

Earl Ray Van Smith Haslett Went home to be with his Lord on November 19, 2012. He was born on June 15, 1925 in Greenfield, TN. and was the seventh child of nine born to Henry and Lula Smith. He talked about picking cotton and strawberries as a child. He moved to Michigan as a 17 year old, looking for work. He found a job at Lindell Drop Forge as a hammerman. Earl retired 38 years later as the head foreman. He was a veteran of WWII, serving on the MARS TASK FORCE in the China-Burma-India Theatre. He enjoyed many years of bowling and playing golf. In 1949, he married Maxine Harter in Lansing, MI. He is survived by his wife and four children---Sharon Hoag (Jerry) Freels of Traverse City, Janet (John) Mulvaney of Holt, Julie (Chad) Rensi of Charlotte and Rodney Smith of Sunset Beach, N.C. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Adam Hoag, Stacy Hoag, John Earl Mulvaney, Angela Mulvaney, Tim Mulvaney, Jennifer (Ken) Holmberg, Bethany Rensi and Kari (Reid) Lambright; three great-grandchildren, Brennan Bever and Nathan and Micah Holmberg ,along with many nieces and nephews. He adored his children, grandchildren and great-grandsons, and he was grateful for the loving care given to him by his wife. He will be forever missed by his adoring and loving family. Earl was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Susan June, his parents, all of his siblings, and son-in-law, Bill Hoag. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 23, 2012, 11:00 a.m. at New Hope Church of Haslett, 1340 Haslett Road. Interment will follow at Rose Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 21, 4-7 p.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, East Lansing.
