Chaplain David L. Voorhees Lansing Chaplain David L.Voorhees was born on December 12, 1923, in Warsaw, NE. He graduated from St. Johns College, Winfield, KS in 1945. In 1949 he graduated from Concordia Seminary and was ordained in January, 1950. In 1962 he completed his M.A. degree from Michigan State University. His impact on our community was known significantly by his work with the greater Lansing Area Council of Churches beginning in 1966 and then as founder of the Chaplaincy program at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI where he served as Director of the Pastoral Care Department until 1991. David was a member of Martin Luther Chapel, and previously Trinity Lutheran and St. Luke Lutheran Churches. He lived his life with a strong desire to minister to the needs of others. During David's ministry in Lansing, he served on numerous Boards, such as, the Red Cross, Hospice, Comprehensive Health Planning Association, Integra, and Emmaus Ministries at the Kennedy Center. David married Virginia M. Roth on May 15, 1953. His parents, William and Blanche Voorhees preceded him in death, as did his wife. David is survived by his daughter, Linda S. Voorhees of Lansing, MI; siblings, Mildred Behrhorst, Shirley Roberts, Dallas Voorhees (Bernita), Marlene Herzinger, Sharlene Cooper (Larry), and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 23, 11:00 a.m. at Martin Luther Chapel, 444 Abbot Rd, East Lansing, with the Rev. David A. Dressel officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River Ave, East Lansing and one hour prior to the service at the church.
