Chris Valkanoff

Okemos

Chris Valkanoff, 89, formerly of Okemos, Michigan and Pompano Beach, Florida passed away Sunday, March 1. 2015  in Jackson, Mississippi after a short illness.  Chris was born in Lansing, Michigan on November 28, 1925 and had a wonderful marriage of 69 years to Sophia (Stoney).

Chris was a proud member of the U.S. Navy and served in World War II on a PT Boat in the South Pacific.  After the return from the war, Chris and Sophia owned the Midway Café on Cedar Street for 20+ years.  Chris also worked for General Motors and retired in 1990.  After retirement Chris and Sophia  moved to Pompano Beach, Florida and became active in owning standardbred harness horses.  It became his passion and hobby.  In 2010, a horse they bred, Whosgoingwhosstaying, was the 2 year old horse of the year and Sophia and Chris were standardbred breeders of the year in Florida. 

Surviving to cherish his memory are daughters Denise (Jack) Stein, Christine (John) McGraw and sons, David (Cindy) and Dennis (Miki).  Chris and Sophia had 8  grandchildren, Kevin (Kara), Stacey (Rob), Jeff (Kim), Joe (Trish), Austin, Morgan, Alexis and Andrew (Christina).

Chris had 11 great-grandchildren and one great-granddaughter due in late March.

A celebration of Chris's life will be held in June in Florida.
