Andy Hurst Jr.

Andy Hurst Jr. LUBBOCK-Feb. 18, 1922 to Feb. 9, 2013 Andy Hurst Jr. was born in Roaring Springs, Texas, to James Andrew Hurst and Maggie Smith Hurst. He is survived by son, Dr. Rick Hurst and daughter-in-law Christy of Nacogdoches, Texas; daughter, Ann Graves and son-in-law Travis Graves of Smithville, Texas; six grandchildren, Ginny Hurst Gould, Andrew Hurst and wife Kristen, Mary Hurst Austin and husband Bobby, Holley Hurst Chapman and husband Andy, Sunni Graves Graham and husband Preston, and Abbi Graves; and great-grandchildren, Reagan Gould, Emma Austin, Genevieve Graham and Thatcher Graham. Andy married Winifred Lee in 1944. He served in the US Army Air Corps as a pilot and then graduated from Texas A&M University in 1948 with an engineering degree. He proceeded to work for Phillips Petroleum. He and Winifred lived in College Station, Borger, Matador, Sudan and Friona, their home for 44 years. They then moved to Lubbock, Texas, and most recently, Andy moved to Nacogdoches, Texas. Andy owned several successful businesses: Hurst Department Store, Parmer County Implement Company and Hurst Real Estate. He retired several times, yet always returned to a new opportunity and business venture. He was a man of values and honor and lived each day with God as his guide. He was a devout Methodist, taught Sunday school, and served on many church and community boards. He helped establish Parmer County Meat Packing Plant (Cargill) and Prairie Acres Nursing Home, both in Friona, Texas. Andy loved to fish, especially with family and friends. He helped found Friona Ski Club and mentored many beginners. His love was building or working with his hands and later in life he built many birdhouses for others. He also painted and enjoyed cooking. A memorial service will be held at St. Luke's United Methodist Church (43rd and Memphis) Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at 1 p.m. in Lubbock, Texas.
