Darlene Northcutt Newby(1936 - 2017)

Lubbock- Darlene Northcutt Newby, age 81, passed away peacefully October 1, 2017, at her home in Lubbock after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease. Mrs. Newby was born May 27, 1936 in Amarillo, Texas to Thomas Dean and Tula Elnora Owens Northcutt. She graduated in 1957 from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Houston with her RN degree. She continued to work at Methodist as a Charge Nurse and Nursing Supervisor until she married Dr. Hi Newby of Del Rio in April of 1959 at the Chapel in Methodist Hospital. They made their home together in Del Rio until November 1977 when they returned to the Houston area.

Mrs. Newby was a devoted wife and mother as well as dedicated community member. While in Del Rio she was a leader in many civic organizations that included the Morning Glory Garden Club, Music Club, Study Club and Del Rio Porcelain Art Club. She still found time to serve as a Cub Scout Den Mother, PTA member and devoted parent and chaperone for St. James Episcopal School. After relocating to the Houston area she dedicated herself to her passion, the art of china painting. This led to her serving as President of the Houston Porcelain Art Club from 1981-1982. In addition, she served as State Federation of Porcelain Art Clubs President from 1982-1983. In 1985 she and Dr. Newby moved to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area where she continued her painting and served as the President of the Dallas Porcelain Art Guild. In 2011 she moved to Lubbock to be closer to her children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Newby was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Hi E. Newby, M.D. in 2011. Left to cherish her memory are sons Byron E. Newby of San Diego, CA and Lubbock, TX, Hi E. Newby, Jr. his wife Regina and her favorite grandson Hi E. Newby III (Hi Hi) all of Lubbock. She was particularly fond of her step-grandchildren Amber and Jeff Carlisle, and their children Taylor and Creed of Seminole as well as Summer and Justin Stracener and their children Ryder and Rhett of Levelland. Her loving sister Peggy Northcutt Sewell, her niece Amy Sewell Nicholls both of Boerne and her nephew Richard Parker Sewell of Dallas.

Visitation will be on Friday, October 6, 2017 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral Home located at 2020 N. Bedell Ave. in Del Rio, Texas.

Graveside service will follow on Friday, October 6, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Masonic Cemetery in Del Rio, Texas under the direction of Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral Home with Pastor Jamie Wootton of Sonora officiating.

Honorary pallbearers are Hi Hi Newby, Andy Kerr, Phillip Calk, Bradley English, Jeff Sampson, Ralph Howard and Trevor Beavan (Darlene said these were my boys too!)

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to, The Darlene Newby Memorial and Dr. Katie Hendley Honorarium Fund for Alzheimer's Research, Texas Tech Foundation, Box 41081, Attn: Byron Kennedy, Lubbock, TX 79409. Gifts should be made out to the Newby Research Fund at Texas Tech University.
