Howard Shafer

Howard Randolph Shafer AMARILLO- Howard Randolph Randy Shafer, 87, died of natural causes on Nov. 21, 2013. Howard was a long time resident of Levelland, Texas. He was born in Memphis, Texas in 1926 and grew up in Hall County. For the majority of his work career he was employed by Standard Oil of Indiana - Pan American, which later became Amoco Oil Company, from which he retired after 33 years of service. After retirement he enjoyed driving student and sport team buses for the Levelland Independent School System. Howard enjoyed woodworking, gardening and searching for Native American and early settler artifacts on the High Plains. Howard was a World War II Combat Veteran and received a Purple Heart in 1945 due to wounds suffered during the battle for Okinawa while serving in the Army with the 96th Infantry Division. Howard is survived by his wife, Loneta Skeet Shafer; his son, Dan Shafer; daughter-in-law, Venetia Shafer; and several nieces and nephews and extended family. A memorial service is pending for family and friends with Cox Funeral Home of Amarillo, Texas. Rev. John Elser will officiate. The family asks that his memory be honored by supporting your local veterans, veteran organizations, and volunteering with your local Meals-On-Wheels program.
