Ismael Mermea LUBBOCK- Ismael Mermea, also known as Benny, 85, of Lubbock passed away on October 6, 2012 in his home surrounded by family. Ismael was born in Floresville, Texas on February 22, 1927 to Juan and Adela (Rodriguez) Mermella. He worked the fields of Texas as a boy and his love of automobiles led him to become a lifelong mechanic. He ran and owned Benny's Machine Shop on Avenue J from 1970 until his retirement in 2003. Ismael was a proud American, having served in the artillery division of the US Army during World War II
. He was also a hard worker, often working from sunrise to sunset, and a devoted father and husband who loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was also a parishioner of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. He found much joy in the simple things of life and could often be heard chuckling. His jovial personality was even present during his final moments. In 1948, he married Eloisa Gonzales. Together they had four daughters, Anita, Lucia, Angelita and Elena. On May 20, 1970, he married Clotilde Contreras. Together they had seven children, Linda, Rosa Maria, Elisa, Florence, Ismael Jr., Liliana and Hilda. During his latter days, he recognized Hopie and Orlando Matamoros as children as well. He was a great brother, being the second born in a family of twelve; he served as a mentor to many of his brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife, Clotilde Contreras; daughters, Anita (Alfredo Davila), Lucia Mermea, Elena Mermea, Linda (Anthony Minnitt), Rosa Maria (Lane Arnold), Elisa Mermea (Victor Lozano), Florence (Robin Perez), Liliana (Robert Hurtado), Hilda (Tyson Beydoun), and Hopie (Danny Rodriguez); sons, Ismael Mermea Jr. and Orlando Matamoros; brothers, Trinidad Mermella, Isaac Mermella, Samuel Mermella and Jesus Mermella; sisters, Estella Casas, Mary Perez, and Rosa Contreras; 24 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Adela Mermea; first wife, Eloisa Mermea; daughter, Angelita Mermea; brothers, Juan Mermeia, Chencho Mermella, and Benigno Mermea; sister, Eloisa Mermella Padilla; and two great-grandchildren. Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 with rosary at 7 p.m. at Calvillo Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial to follow at Brownfield Cemetery with military honors. The family would like to thank Team Tango and Dr. Karen Agler at the Lubbock VA Outpatient Clinic and the wonderful team of Hospice of Lubbock.
