J. C. Chaffin LOOP-J. C. (John Charles) Chaffin, age 87, of Loop passed away Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, in Lubbock. Services will be Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Loop with Rev. James Shelton officiating. Burial will follow in Gaines County Cemetery in Loop. Personal services have been entrusted to Mark A. Jones Funeral Directors of Seagraves. Mr. Chaffin was born Jan. 27, 1926, to J. R. and Ellaree Chaffin in Lamesa, Texas. He moved to Loop in 1961 from Welch. J.C. married the love of his life, Helen Ruth Merritt, on June 2, 1961, in Lamesa. He always said she made him a better man. Helen preceded him in death on July 22, 2011. Mr. Chaffin served in the U.S. Army
. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star
, WWII Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal. He also was a member of the First Baptist Church in Loop and served as a deacon and greeter. J.C. met his wife bowling, and they both loved sports. He coached lots of little league teams, and they enjoyed watching Lady Raiders, Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers. They were always seen at all sporting events and won an award for most supporting fan. He also played minor league baseball in Colorado and played basketball in the Army. He was very proud to have served in the Army protecting the United States of America. Above all he was proud of all his grandchildren. Those left to cherish his memories include one daughter, Cynthia Hand of Loop; two brothers, Bob Chaffin of Alabama and Billy Holladay of Flower Mound; four grandchildren, Trey Glaspie of Austin, Sierra Greenwood and husband Grant of Abilene, Hannah Hand and Will Hand, both of Alpine; one great-grandson, due in March 2014; and a daughter-in-law, Shawna Glaspie of Odessa. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Raymond Chaffin; and one son, Harold Glaspie. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to South Plains Food Bank, 4612 Locust Ave., Lubbock, TX 79404.
