Mary Oler

Mary Oler PLAINVIEW-Mary Oler, 85, of Plainview, formerly of Tulia, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012. Graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, in Rose Hill Cemetery in Tulia with the Rev. David Hawkins officiating. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Plainview. Arrangements are under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today, Dec. 6, 2012, at the funeral home. Mary was born Nov. 28, 1927, to Alfred and Etheline Pollard in Amarillo, Texas. She graduated Amarillo High School in 1945. She married J.L. Jack Oler on May 2, 1948, in Tulia, Texas. She received her bachelor's degree in 1963 and her master's degree in 1968 from West Texas State College. She taught 5th and 6th grade in Tulia, Texas, for 20 years. She was named Teacher of the Year twice and served as past president for Tulia Retired Teachers. She was active in Cub Scouts and Meals on Wheels. She took part in the organization of the Tulia Day Nursery. After retiring, she took care of her invalid husband for 11 years. He preceded her in death on Jan. 11, 2001. She moved to Plainview in 2003. She served on the board and was a volunteer for C.A.S.A. and the hospital auxiliary. She was an elder and member of First Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Alfred and Etheline Pollard; one brother, Mike Pollard; and one sister, Barbara Dunlap. She is survived by one daughter, Karen Sandlin and husband Bruce of Plainview, Texas; one son, Dr. Walter Oler and wife Kathy of Lubbock, Texas; two brothers, Jim Pollard and wife Peggy of Canadian, Texas, and Pat Pollard and wife Vicki of Amarillo, Texas; one sister, Ann Reeves of Amarillo, Texas; four grandchildren, Celinda Ledger and husband Peter, Scott Sandlin and wife Julie, Anna Oler and husband Alex Meyer, and Rob Oler and Elisa Bierschenk; and six great-grandchildren.
