Stewart Lynn Gillespie

Stewart Lynn Gillespie LUBBOCK-Stewart Lynn Gillespie was born July 11, 1949, in Lubbock, Texas, to Edmond Lee and Velma Lee (Cunningham) Gillespie. He passed away on Nov. 14, 2012, at the age of 63. Funeral services will be Saturday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. in Resthaven Funeral Chapel with burial to follow in City of Lubbock Cemetery. Visitation will be held today, Nov. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Resthaven Funeral Home. Stewart was the middle child with an older sister, Cynthia Beal, of North Richland Hills, and younger brother, Roger Gillespie, of Lubbock. Stewart married Claudia Jernigan on Aug. 15, 1969. They have one daughter, Jennifer Lynne Gillespie, of Dallas. After graduating from Coronado High School in 1967, Stewart attended York College and Texas Tech University. He proudly served in the United States Army and the Texas National Guard. Stewart graduated from Sunset School of Preaching in 1977 and earned his Bachelor of Ministry in 1998. He served as the pulpit minister to congregations of the Church of Christ in Buena Vista and Columbus, Ga.; Dallas, Taylor, Idalou, Borger and Seagraves, Texas; Indianapolis, Ind.; Kalamazoo, Mich.; and Sierra Vista and Casa Grande, Ariz. Stewart was one of the Biblical scholars involved in the translation of the New King James Version of the Bible. In 1991, after the Iron Curtain fell, Stewart went with an evangelism team to Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. Due to health issues, Stewart retired from the pulpit in 2004 but never retired from the WORD. Stewart was preceded in death by his parents, Edmond and Velma Gillespie, and grandparents, Sylvan McConnico and Iva Lee Cunningham, and Carl Lee and Nodie Gillespie. Stewart was a loving husband, father, brother and friend. He loved to laugh and was always ready to tease and joke. He was a comfort to those around him. He will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the , Carpenter's Kitchen or Sunset International Bible Institute.
