Barbara Smith LUBBOCK-Barbara Smith passed from this life Friday, Aug. 17, 2012. Family and friends will gather for fellowship on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers, Lubbock, Texas. A service to celebrate her life of 81 years will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers with Dr. Wyatt E. Fenno officiating. Barbara was born Feb. 21, 1931, to William Porter Thurman Jr. and Leona Archer Thurman in San Antonio, Texas. She grew up in Austin, Texas, where she graduated from Austin High School. She earned a bachelor's degree in business administration and a minor in education from the University of Texas at Austin. Barbara was a member of Gamma Phi Beta International Sorority for the past 62 years. She was a longtime member of Westmont Christian Church in Lubbock, Texas. On Dec. 23, 1952, Barbara Thurman married the love of her life, L.T. Smith, at the First Baptist Church in Austin, Texas. She was a loving wife and mother. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, L.T., and their children, Laura and Larry Smith.
