Earnest Lee Mapes LUBBOCK-Earnest Lee Mapes, 69, of Lubbock left his temporary earthly home and went to start the next chapter in his life with our Heavenly Father on Sunday, March 3, 2013. He was born to Jack and Rubye Mapes in Anton, Texas, Dec. 18, 1943. He moved to Lorenzo, and that is where he graduated Lorenzo High, where he played football, ran track and loved to rodeo. After graduating, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served two tours in Vietnam, where he was a Sergeant in the 1st Bridge, 7th Engineers division. Lee was active in the VFW, Elks Lodge, and the Kooties. He enjoyed going Junkin and would horse trade with anyone who had something to trade. He loved kids and the elderly. He married his soul mate Sept. 15, 1978, Ms. Mona Averett, and spent the remainder of his years adoring his bride. Mr. Mapes was a welder by trade, which he enjoyed, so it was more of a hobby than a career. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jackie Gerald; and sister, Jane. Survivors include his wife, Mona; daughter, Kelli Mapes Krieg and husband, Gary; son, John Holocker and wife, Deana; two grandsons, Lukas Wyatt and Lance Weston; brother, Travis Beau Mapes and wife, Marcie; brother-in-law, Ervin Averett and wife, Lisa; sister-in-law, Kathy Adam and wife, Ron; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends whom he loved so much. Special Thank You to all who helped him through the battle of Alzheimer's: Courtney, Thiry, Eloise, Eric and Olivia. Pallbearers will be Gary Krieg, Eric Darwin, Ron Adam and Clay Adam. Honorary pallbearers are his brother Marines from the 1st Bridge, 7th Engineers division: Cliff Echols, Paul Cooper, Domingo Cornelio, Lowell Heiderscheidt, Jimmy Jackson, John Kurtz, Don Nettles, Jim Packenham, Tom Perius, Don Primrose and George Westbay. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, March 8, 2013, at Griffin Mortuary. Graveside services with military honors by the Marine Corps will be presented at 1 p.m. in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Griffin Mortuary. Pastor Russell Kuhns of Martin Springs Baptist Church will officiate.
