LaFonda Townsend SLATON-Funeral services for LaFonda Townsend, 74, of Slaton will be 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, in Bible Baptist Church with David Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow in Englewood Cemetery under the guidance of Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton. LaFonda was born Oct. 17, 1938, in Lubbock County. She passed from this life Oct. 23, 2012. She attended Slaton High School. LaFonda Akin married Bobby Townsend on March 6, 1954, in Slaton. They moved to San Diego and returned to Slaton in 1957. LaFonda worked for Levi Strauss, PCCA and Business Solutions. She and Bobby owned the Country Store at Ransom Canyon before she went to work for the Department of Human Services. She later worked for the Lubbock Boll Weevil Eradication District. LaFonda was a faithful and active member of Bible Baptist Church, where she sang in the church choir, with the Glad Tidings Quartet, and was a driver for the Bus Ministry of the church. LaFonda was also a volunteer with Slaton's Meals on Wheels. She was preceded in death by her parents, R.R. and Letha Akin, and brothers, Gay and Guy. Her survivors include her husband, Bobby of Slaton; sons, Bobby and wife Donna Townsend of Marine, Ill., and Billy Townsend of Slaton; daughters, Debbie Bray and husband Richard, and Cathy Gardiner, all of Lubbock; sister, Polly Clark of Lubbock; along with 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. The family will have a visitation today from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Englunds. The family suggests memorials to Slaton's Meals on Wheels, 230 W Lynn, Slaton, TX 79364.
