Margaret King Ragus LUBBOCK- Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of Margaret King Ragus, age 82, of Lubbock, Monday, October 8, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Monterey Church of Christ. Our beloved Margaret departed this life on Oct. 5, 2012 at 10:30 a.m., after a sudden illness. She was born June 17, 1930, in Nashville, Tenn., to Henry and Lydia Burcham King. She grew up in Memphis, graduating from Central High School in 1948. She was baptized into Christ by Bro. E.W. McMillan on August 22, 1945, at Union Avenue Church of Christ in Memphis. She enrolled in Abilene Christian College in the fall of 1948, where she met Pete Ragus of Campbell, California. They were married on December 15, 1949, in Abilene, with Bro. McMillan again officiating. After Pete's graduation from Abilene Christian and the birth of their first daughter, the young family lived in Stamford, Texas, for one year and then moved to Corpus Christi, where they spent twelve eventful years and made lifelong friends. They were members of the Hillcrest Church of Christ in Corpus Christi. The other four children were born during these years. When Pete became Athletic Director of the Lubbock Public Schools in 1964, the family moved to Lubbock. Margaret's first priority was always her family, and many of her activities revolved around them. She became an expert seamstress and made nearly all the clothes the children wore, as well as everything she owned, including very difficult projects - coats, wedding garments, etc. She was employed by Lubbock Independent School District as an aide and clerk. When she took her first job, she said she would stay only a semester if things didn't work out, but she stayed for 17 years. It was during these years that the expenses of the family were the greatest, with the children being of college age, and her work added to the available income. While working at Monterey High School for ten years, she formed friendships with students that have lasted thought the years. She considered this time period as a great blessing. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Pete Ragus and her five children, Margaret Ann Ragus, Donna Ragus Orr and husband Rick, Jim Ragus and wife Tamara, Kay Ragus, and Barbara Ragus Gross and husband Robert. She was the loving grandmother of Jared Orr and wife Melissa, Benjamin Ragus Orr, James Ryan Ragus, Angela Ragus Greene and husband Charles, Anna Gross Roach and husband Travis, Henry Gross and Laura Gross. She was very proud of five great-grandsons, Abraham Orr, Daniel Orr, Jude Orr, Aiden Ragus and Dimitri Greene. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Edward King; a sister, Edith King Lowe; a nephew, J.T. Lowe; and an infant grandson, Austin Cruse Ragus. Memorials are suggested to the Children's Home of Lubbock, P.O. Box 2824, Lubbock, Texas 79403. To send your words of encouragement to Margaret's family, visit www.memorialdesigners.net.
