Mary Gladys West LUBBOCK-Mary Gladys West, 104, of Temple, Texas, formerly of Lubbock, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 22, 2012. Dossman Funeral Home of Belton, Texas, handled the Temple and Belton arrangements. A service celebrating her life will be held in Sanders Funeral Home Chapel in Lubbock, Texas, on Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at 3 p.m. Visitation will be one hour preceding the service. Sanders Funeral Home is located at 1420 Main St., Lubbock, Texas. Officiating will be the Rev. John Ballard and the Rev. Norman Sisk. Burial will be in City of Lubbock Cemetery. Gladys Gilbert West was born on Nov. 21, 1907, to Lillie Beatrice and J.D. Gilbert in Blackwell, Texas. She graduated from Spur High School in 1925, entered Texas Tech the first year it opened in 1925, and graduated in 1930. At the time of her death, she was the oldest living graduate of Tech. She taught in schools in Texas and New Mexico. Gladys married Jackson R. West on Dec. 20, 1936, in Spur, Texas. He preceded her in death in 1965. Also preceding her were her parents, Lillie Beatrice and J. D. Gilbert; three sisters; three brothers; and two nieces. Survivors include her daughter, Caroline West of Belton, Texas; a son, Ray and his wife Sherilyn West of Allen, Texas; one granddaughter, Deborah and husband Glenn Vanderburg of Plano, Texas; one grandson, David West and wife Shelby of Wichita Falls, Texas; and three great-grandsons, James and Daniel Vanderburg, and Brodey West. Gladys was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lubbock for over 70 years. She taught Bible classes for young and adult women. She was also active in the Women's Missionary Society. She was a great lover of flowers and had a lovely flower garden wherever she lived. The flowers she shared with friends, neighbors, and those who were sick in the hospital. She usually had a big garden of fruits and vegetables that she also shared. She will be greatly missed by her family and a host of friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
