Robert E. Avery LUBBOCK- Robert E. Avery, Jr., 93, of Lubbock, went to be with the Lord on February 6, 2013. His life will be celebrated at George Price Funeral Home in Levelland at 3:30 p.m. Monday, February 11, 2013, with burial to follow in Levelland Cemetery. The family will receive guests and friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at George Price Funeral Home. Robert was born February 18, 1919 in Duke, Oklahoma and moved to Whitharral, Texas at age 11. He started barbering at 14 and was so short he stood on a coke crate. After graduating from Whitharral high school, he received his barber license before being drafted in 1942 serving in the Fourth Infantry in Alaska and the South Pacific. He married Mildred Clark September 9, 1947. They were devoted to each other for 65 years. They had two children, Rex (who preceded him in death) and Rita but they also raised their nephew's Steve and Johnny Graham in Whitharral where they farmed. Robert also barbered in Levelland, giving many men their first haircut. He is survived by his wife, Mildred of Lubbock; daughter, Rita Smith and her husband Drew of Lubbock; four grandchildren, Angela Ward and husband Kevin, Heather Ward and husband Scott all of San Angelo, Jenni Burns and husband Jim of Lubbock, and Lance Modawell and wife Crystal of San Antonio; he was blessed with eight great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Don Avery of Whitharral, Dewayne Avery of Petersburg, and Glen Avery of Electra. He retired in 1979 and moved to Possum Kingdom Lake. When he got too old to fish, they moved to Lubbock where he passed of natural causes.
