Wilma Pope ABERNATHY- Wilma Pope, 92, of Abernathy, Texas passed away peacefully Saturday evening, February 2, 2013 surrounded by her children. She was born May 21, 1920 to Ralph and Agnes (Vernon) Motheral in Olustee, Okla. The Motheral family moved to the Cooper Community when Wilma was young then on to Abernathy, where she graduated from Abernathy High School in 1938. She met and married her class mate and love of her life, E. J. Pope, December 23, 1938. They were engaged in farming except for the years E. J. served in the Army during WWII. Wilma moved her two young sons to California to be close to E. J.'s base. She was a devoted Christian wife and mother and life time member of the Church of Christ in Abernathy. Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, E. J.; her parents, Ralph and Agnes Motheral; two sisters, Imogene Shires and Wynelle Pope; and one brother, Bill Motheral. Wilma is survived by three children, sons, Charles and Milton (Angela) and daughter, Karen Waits all of Abernathy; ten grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Donald (Billie) of Kress, Texas, Lawrence and R. K. (P. J.) all of Palestine, Texas. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 5, 2013, in the Church of Christ in Abernathy with David Bennett officiating. Visitation will be held at Abell Funeral Home Monday evening from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Burial will follow in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home and Flower Shop of Abernathy, Texas. The family suggests memorials be sent to the Abernathy Church of Christ, The Abernathy Cemetery Association or to the Children's Home of Lubbock.
