Fidencia Castro LUBBOCK-Fidencia Castro died peacefully on Jan. 21, 2014. The family will be receiving friends Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at 6 p.m. at Guajardo Funeral Chapels. A rosary will follow at 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Fr. Martin Pi a officiating. Interment will be in Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park. She was born Dec. 27, 1928, in Karnes City, Texas. Her parents Severo and Concepcion Rodriguez-Silva were an American farming family that grew cotton. As a result of the Great Depression, they lost their land and were forced to join many families across the nation and become migrant workers. Despite the challenges, she committed to memory the wealth of love that overflowed from her family. She married Juan E. Castro Nov. 11, 1946. They moved to Lubbock in 1959. In 1970, the family experienced the Lubbock tornado that demolished their home. They moved away temporarily, and returned in 1972. They had 14 children and also raised two grandchildren, Vivian and Michelle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Juan; her daughters, Dianita, Geneva Perez, Dianne Castro; and a son, Charlie. She enjoyed playing bingo. Her favorite flower was the Texas bluebonnet. In 2009 she was selected as Grandmother of the Year by Zeta Phi Beta. She is survived by sons, John, Daniel, David, Mike Castro; and daughters, Janie Castañeda, Mary Rodriguez, Melissa Perez, Connie, Julia, and Melinda Castro. She had 38 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
