Steve Komarek LUBBOCK-Steve Komarek, 57, of Wolfforth, passed away on Jan. 26, 2014. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Feb. 8, 2014, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers, 6025 82nd Street. Steve was born on Sept. 15, 1956, to Alphonsus and Monica (Smith) Komarek in Waterloo, Iowa. His family moved to Lubbock in 1961, and Steve attended Lubbock schools, graduating from Monterey High School. He started working at Varsity Book Store while still in high school, eventually making a career in the textbook business. He married Janie Lee Blair in 1977, and they had two daughters, Amanda and Michelle. In 1982, he was awarded the American Red Cross Certificate of Merit, which was signed by President Ronald Reagan. In the late 1980s, Steve moved to Wolfforth, where he later became a volunteer firefighter in the Wolfforth Fire Department. He was awarded the Fireman of the Year and Most Active Firefighter awards at least twice each. Steve joined the Wolfforth Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, and in 2001 he was named the chamber's Man of the Year. Through his work with the fire department, he eventually got involved in putting on Wolfforth's first fireworks display in 1996. He later became licensed to put on larger displays and has been the driving force behind Wolfforth's Paint the Sky on the Fourth of July fireworks show. Steve also played a key role in setting up the fire department's Santa project to take presents to children who might not get many. In 1998, he became the first president of the Wolfforth Meals on Wheels program. In 2003, Steve helped to start the Wolfforth Regional Fire Academy through Texas A&M University. He was also a member of the South Plains Regional Balloon Club, and helped to organize several of the South Plains Balloon Round-ups. Steve met the love of his life in 2006, and married Judy Komarek in 2010. Together they enjoyed traveling and volunteer work. Steve is survived by his wife, Judy; five brothers, David, Bruce, Frank, Henry and John; two daughters, Amanda Brooks and Michelle Komarek; one grandson, Timothy Trey Neumann; and two stepchildren, Amy Vallee and Richard Lack. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alphonsus and Monica Komarek; and his brother, Richard Komarek.
