Vlasta Dorothy Makovy LUBBOCK-Vlasta Dorothy Urbanovsky Makovy was born Jan. 10, 1920, in West, Texas, to John Urbanovsky and Josephine Sykora. Vlasta married Frank Makovy Sept. 12, 1943. Vlasta was a member of Christ the King Catholic Cathedral since 1970. She was a devoted member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Pope Pius XII Court since 1961 and was honored as the oldest Catholic Daughter in 2009 with a 50-year pin for service. Vlasta loved flowers and was known as the Flower Lady at Christ the King Cathedral. Her passion was to serve the religious: priests and seminarians. For many years Vlasta wrote birthday, Christmas, and Priest's Appreciation Day cards for all priests and seminarians of the diocese. Vlasta enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, the priests, and the seminarians. Vlasta passed away Feb. 23, 2014, surrounded by her loving family. Survivors include her two daughters, Deborah Schuknecht of Seattle, Wash., and Betty Powers of Lubbock, Texas. Vlasta had four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Vlasta was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Makovy; and her twin daughters, Kathy and Francis Makovy. Rosary will be recited at Sanders Funeral Home at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at Christ the King Cathedral, 4011-54th Street. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations in Vlasta Makovy's memory may be made to Christ the King Cathedral, 4011-54th Street, Lubbock, TX 79413.
