Sam J. McAlister SLATON - Funeral services for Sam J. McAlister, 71, of Slaton will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 29, 2014 in Slaton's Bible Baptist Church with Chris Downer officiating. Internment is in Peaceful Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton. Sam was born September 9, 1942 in Childress, TX, the son of John Thomas and Nerva Jewel (Lowery) McAlister. He passed from this life April 27, 2014 in Lubbock, TX. Sam's family moved to Lubbock at an early age. He attended Lubbock Schools. In 1961 he entered the U.S. Army for 3 years. Returning to Lubbock in 1964, he started his business, Lubbock Gasket. In 1984 he sold out to pursue his passion for art. After three years he resumed his sales career and bought South Plains Gasket and operated it from 1992 through 1996, selling to American Industrial Bearing & Supply. He married Gwin on April 21, 1991. His survivors include his wife, Gwin; sons, Michael and wife Martha McAlister of Pearland, TX and Monty McKay of Lubbock; daughters, Sheri Jeffries and husband Steve of Lubbock, Kandy Kirk and husband Scott of Broken Arrow, OK, and Kris Armitage and husband Brad of Salt Lake City, UT; his mother, Nerva Jewel Sherman of Lubbock; three sisters, Jean Brown and Darlene Caldwell both of Lubbock and Jo Spencer of Fort Worth; along with 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. The family had a visitation Monday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to FTD Foundation, Frontotemporal Dementia Research.
