Shelby Keith Hildebrand LUBBOCK-Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of Shelby Hildebrand at 3 p.m., Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Inurnment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Denison, TX, at a later date. Our beloved Shelby went to be with the Lord on Aug. 1, 2014. To view Shelby's tribute page and leave your words of encouragement visit www.memorialdesigners.net. Shelby was born on June 2, 1931, to the late Virgil and Ottomie (Burk) Hildebrand in Vernon, TX. He graduated from Vernon High School, and then in 1952, he received his Bachelor's degree from North Texas State University. Shelby served in the United State Navy from 1952 to 1956. Following his discharge from the Navy, he returned to North Texas State and received his Master's degree in 1957. In 1962, Shelby received his Ph.D. from Iowa State University. He retired as professor of mathematics at Texas Tech University. He married Barbara Davis in 1977 in Denison, TX. Shelby served on many boards and committees at Texas Tech over the years, including the University Chapter Mortar Board and T.A.C.T. (Texas Assoc. of College Teachers), where he served as president of the local chapter. Shelby was recognized with many honors, one of which was Mathematics Teacher of the Year 1990-91. He had numerous publications in mathematic journals and grant proposals funded. He sponsored the University Class at St. John's United Methodist Church and served as treasurer there for many years before moving his membership to Covenant Presbyterian Church. Shelby enjoyed boating and traveling of any kind, whether it was on his motorcycle or in his motor home. Along with his parents, Shelby was preceded in death by a brother, James L. Hildebrand; and a sister, Oneita Spencer. Survivors are his wife, Barbara; children, Pamela Black and Ronald Black; a granddaughter, Jennifer Bartosh; and a brother, Truman (Kelly) Hildebrand and wife Carolyn. Memorials are suggested Covenant Presbyterian Church, 4600 48th Street, Lubbock, TX 79414.
