Ethel Jo Owens SPUR- Ethel Jo Owens, 95, formerly of Spur, Texas, went home to be with her Lord and Savior as she passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at her home in Grow, Texas. Visitation will be held at Campbell Funeral Home in Spur on October 1, 2012 from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Spur, Texas on October 2, 2012 at 2 p.m., with Reverend Richard Harbison officiating under the direction of Campbell Funeral Home in Spur. Burial will follow at Spur Memorial Cemetery. Ethel Palestine Josephine was born in Iredale, Texas to Joseph Edward and Mary Jane (Gould) Dozier on March 27, 1917. In 1921, her family moved from Erath County by covered wagons to Dickens County to farm the land. In 1930, her father Joseph got a job with the railroad allowing him to move his family into Spur where Jo and her siblings attended school. The Dozier's had always been God-loving people, therefore after moving into Spur they became very involved with the First Baptist Church and many missions. Mrs. Owens became a Christian and member of First Baptist Church of Spur when she was ten years old and has faithfully served the Lord since this time, as well as faithfully attend the Spur First Baptist Church devoutly until she moved to Grow, Texas in 2001. She attended Living Church of Jesus Christ (LCJC), where her son-in-law Chris McCauley pastors, until her death. Mrs. Owens met Melvin C. Owens and fell in love. They married on February 9th, 1952 in Lovington, New Mexico. Mr. and Mrs. Owens made their home in Lubbock, Texas with four children, through 1962. Then they returned to Mrs. Owens' home town of Spur until 1976, when they made their home in Girard, Texas until Mr. Owens' death in 1993. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Owens returned to Spur until she retired to Grow, Texas in 2001 to be closer to her children. Mrs. Owens was a wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker and community care taker. She enjoyed reading (especially her Bible), writing, drawing and painting, singing, quilting, movies, board games, basketball, softball and spending time with her family. In the early 60's she wrote two songs that were recorded, How Could You Forget So Soon and A Little Bird Told Me. Jo was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Melvin C. Owens, Sr.; her parents, Joseph Edward and Mary Jane Dozier; two brothers, William, and Henry Dozier; her sisters, Lilly Dozier, Annie Jane and her husband Red Causey, Nellie and her husband Wesley E. Owens, and Katy; her daughter-in-law, Judy Melton Owens; and her grandson, Kenneth Craig McCauley. She is survived by her four children, Melvin C. Owens, Jr. of Grow, Texas, Charlotte and her husband Chris McCauley of Grow, Texas, Jimmy Owens of Arlington, Texas, and Mary and her husband Rick Charo of Vernon, Texas; her eight grandchildren, Calvin McCauley, Don McCauley, Aubrey McCauley, Sharonda Donnell, Clell McCauley, Shaundra Dombrowski, Timothy Charo, and Derrick Charo; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Owens lived a remarkable life and left a wonderful Christian legacy for her family to follow. She will be truly missed!
