Basil Woodrow Sherman CUERO- Basil Woodrow Sherman, 96, of Cuero passed from this life to eternal happiness and joy at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 28, 2012. His passing was peaceful and free of pain. He was born on January 5, 1916 in Detroit, Texas to Lee and Minnie Sherman. Basil was a very civic-minded citizen. He was a 50 year Lions Club member holding every office of his local club in Olton, Texas. He was a 32nd degree Mason, member of the Olton Volunteer Fire Department, deacon in the Baptist church for many years, and Olton Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1976. He was also an honorary member of the Cuero Volunteer Fire Department. He rarely missed Sunday school at First Baptist Church in Cuero. One of his greatest joys was being a member of the 7:00 DQ Coffee Drinkers club. His only dark side was being a lifetime accomplished cheater at Solitaire. Basil was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Earl, of Tampa, Fla.; a brother, Almon, of Port Arthur; a brother, Leon, of Odessa; a sister, Vera Simpson, of Abilene; a brother, Hugh, of Victoria; and his loving wife of 57 years, Ruby Lee Sherman, of Cuero. Basil is survived by his wife, Ernesta Sherman, of Cuero; a daughter, Kay Sherman of Clear Water, Fla.; a son, Rusty Sherman of Burleson; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and many close friends. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 10 a.m., at the First Baptist Church in Cuero. The family requests any memorials be made to First Baptist Church in Cuero.
