Jim Davis Jr. SLATON-Services for Jim Davis, 68, of Slaton will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 22, 2013, in Slaton's First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jo Gay, Rev. Steve Campbell and Rev. Cleve Kerby officiating. Burial will follow in Englewood Cemetery under the direction of Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton. Jim was born June 11, 1944, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He passed from this life after a brief and sudden illness March 19, 2013 in Lubbock. Jim graduated from Richardson High School, Richardson, Texas, in 1962. He attended Texas Tech University before enlisting in the United States Air Force. Jim was a veteran of the Vietnam War. After serving in the military, he returned to Texas Tech and earned a BA degree in journalism. Jim worked for the Fort Worth Star Telegram after graduation. He later went to work for a weekly newspaper in Plainview and also served as municipal court judge in Plainview. Jim married Ko Kaemper on May 1, 1982, in Plainview. They moved to Slaton when they purchased the Slatonite on Feb. 11, 1984, and he became the editor. Jim was a loyal and dedicated citizen of Slaton. He was recognized as Slaton's Man of the Year in 1995 and 2012 and Boss of the Year in 1990. He served as president on numerous civic and culture organizations: Slaton Lions Club (secretary/treasurer); past president of Slaton Chamber of Commerce, Harvey House Association, Slaton Senior Citizen Board and Slaton Air Museum Association; and was a charter member of the board of directors of Slaton Economic Development Corporation. Those who will cherish is memory include his wife, Ko; daughters, Amanda Davis, both of Slaton, and Melissa Davis of Roanoke, Texas; granddaughters, Alyssa, Ashlie, Amber and Emma; and great-grandson, Charlie. There will be a family visitation at the funeral home today from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The family suggests memorials to Slatons' Meals on Wheels, Harvey House Association or Air Museum.
